The South Carolina Supreme Court on Wednesday threw out convicted killer Alex Murdaugh’s double murder convictions in a stunning decision that will force prosecutors to retry one of the most infamous murder cases in recent memory.
In a unanimous 5-0 ruling, the court overturned Murdaugh’s convictions for the June 2021 murders of his wife, Maggie Murdaugh, and son, Paul Murdaugh, finding that improper conduct by former court clerk Becky Hill tainted the jury during the nationally watched trial.
“Although we are aware of the time, money, and effort expended for this lengthy trial, we have no choice but to reverse the denial of Murdaugh’s motion for a new trial due to Hill’s improper external influences on the jury,” the justices wrote.
The bombshell ruling wipes away the 2023 guilty verdict that sentenced Murdaugh to two life terms behind bars and reopens a case that captivated the country with its mix of wealth, power, corruption, addiction and brutal murder.
Murdaugh, once a powerful personal injury attorney from a storied South Carolina legal dynasty, was convicted in March 2023 after prosecutors argued he gunned down his wife and youngest son at the family’s hunting estate to distract from mounting financial crimes that threatened to expose him as a fraud.
During the six-week trial, jurors heard testimony detailing how Murdaugh stole millions from vulnerable clients and his own law firm. Murdaugh admitted under oath that he lied to investigators about his whereabouts the night of the killings, but he insisted he did not murder his wife and son.
The decision marks another extraordinary twist in the downfall of the once-prominent Murdaugh family, whose members held immense influence across South Carolina’s Lowcountry region for generations.
Even with the murder convictions overturned, Murdaugh is not expected to walk free anytime soon. He remains behind bars after pleading guilty to dozens of financial crimes and receiving lengthy state and federal prison sentences tied to fraud, theft and related offenses.
