More viral videos from Springfield, Ohio, highlight growing frustration among residents as they grapple with the effects of an influx of up to 20,000 Haitian migrants. At a recent city commission meeting, a long-time resident broke down in tears as she described the challenges she and her family have faced.

“I have men that cannot speak English in my front yard, screaming at me, throwing mattresses in my yard,” the woman, who has lived in her home for 45 years, said. “I couldn’t defend myself if I had to. My husband is elderly. Who’s protecting us?”

She expressed concerns about the city’s response, stating that while she understands the migrants are under temporary protected status and city services are overwhelmed, she feels left vulnerable. “I want out of this town. Please give me a reason to stay,” she pleaded.

Mounting Concerns About Safety and Services

Her testimony came during the same meeting where another resident claimed that Haitian migrants were causing disorder in public spaces, flipping over trash cans and cars and decapitating ducks for food. He further suggested that it was unsafe for children to walk to school.

In another viral video, a Springfield man attributed rising car insurance rates to the surge of Haitian migrants, many of whom, he claimed, do not know how to drive. His concerns are especially poignant following a tragic school bus accident involving a migrant driver that resulted in the death of an 11-year-old child.

“My insurance went up because of the cost of doing business in my area,” he said. “We have had an enormous amount of car accidents because they don’t know how to drive.” He added, “One-third of our population is now Haitian immigrants, undocumented people.”

A Community Strained

The controversy in Springfield revolves around the significant influx of Haitian migrants that has caused frustration and concern among local residents. Since 2020, an estimated 12,000 to 20,000 Haitians have moved to the city, which has a population of around 60,000. Many of these migrants are in the U.S. under Temporary Protected Status (TPS), granted due to unsafe conditions in Haiti. However, the city’s infrastructure and services were not prepared for such a rapid increase in population.

Residents have raised concerns about public safety, housing shortages, and increased pressure on emergency services. Some have also voiced more extreme allegations, such as accusations that migrants were killing local wildlife and pets for food, which has further fueled tensions. City officials, including Mayor Rob Rue, acknowledged that the city was “saturated” and unprepared for the influx. Local services, such as the police and fire departments, are reportedly struggling to cope with the demands placed on them by the population surge.
