President Donald Trump is drawing praise from some unexpected quarters as his administration advances a series of renovation and beautification projects across Washington, DC in preparation for the nation’s 250th anniversary.

The efforts focus on restoring prominent public spaces and historic landmarks, with improvements ranging from landscaping to infrastructure repairs. Among the highlighted projects are upgrades to fountains in key parks and work on the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, a central feature of the National Mall that dates back to 1922.

According to reporting, some Democratic figures and critics of the president have acknowledged the visible progress. ActBlue communications strategist Carter Christensen reacted positively to the restoration of the fountain at Meridian Hill Park, expressing enthusiasm about seeing the long-dormant feature functioning again. Similarly, Trump critic Anthony LaMesa commented on the administration’s work on fountains in Lafayette Square, noting that long-neglected structures were finally being repaired.

The reflecting pool project has been a centerpiece of the broader initiative. In a video statement, Trump described the pool as having been in poor condition, citing issues such as leaks and cleanliness. He also emphasized cost-saving measures, explaining that initial estimates for renovations were far higher than what his administration ultimately pursued. As part of the refurbishment, the pool is being repainted in what he described as “American flag blue,” a finish he said is designed to last for decades.

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum publicly supported the project, signaling confidence that the improvements will enhance one of the capital’s most recognizable sites.

Beyond restoration work, the administration has also proposed new additions to the landscape. Trump recently unveiled plans for a triumphal arch in Washington, presenting it as a long-term cultural and architectural contribution tied to the upcoming anniversary celebrations.

The White House has framed the initiative as part of a broader push to improve both the appearance and safety of the capital. In a statement, spokeswoman Taylor Rogers said the renovations are widely popular and emphasized their significance ahead of the 250th anniversary of the United States.

As preparations continue, the combination of restoration projects and new proposals reflects an effort to reshape Washington’s public spaces in time for a milestone moment in American history—one that is already prompting a measure of bipartisan acknowledgment, even amid ongoing political divisions.
