At the National Prayer Breakfast on Thursday, President Donald Trump passionately declared that Americans are a “people ordained by God” to live in the “freest and most exceptional nation” in the history of the world. His remarks resonated with themes of Manifest Destiny and American exceptionalism, as he reflected on the nation’s identity and its historical role on the global stage.
After acknowledging a period of national decline, Trump expressed optimism about America’s future, stating that the nation is now “reclaiming our rightful identity.” He stressed that after years of what he saw as a lost direction, Americans are reasserting their confidence in their exceptional role in world history.
“After years of decline, Americans are reasserting our true identity as a people ordained by God to be the freest and most exceptional nation ever to exist on the face of the earth,” Trump said. “But we weren’t that for four years. We’re getting there very soon, very quickly. I’ll be able to say it, and we’ll be able to say it again.”
He emphasized the importance of America’s belief in itself, a belief that he says is rooted in divine providence. He pointed to an international shift in sentiment, claiming that even leaders who were once critical of the U.S. are now expressing optimism about the nation’s future.
The president used the occasion to highlight several pivotal moments in American history that, according to him, were powered by the nation’s belief in its “God-given destiny.” He pointed to the pioneers who settled the West, the abolition of slavery, the defeat of fascism, and the fight against communism as examples of the United States overcoming immense challenges through confidence in its divine purpose.
The president’s remarks at the National Prayer Breakfast underscored his continued focus on presenting America as a force for good, destined to overcome any obstacle, as long as the nation remains faithful to its founding principles.
Trump’s speech came just hours after he addressed members of Congress earlier in the day, where he shared a deeply personal reflection. He recounted the assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, during the summer of 2024, and expressed his belief that divine intervention played a role in saving his life. The personal nature of this revelation added a layer of emotion to his speech, reinforcing his message that God’s hand has been guiding both him and the nation through difficult times.
The National Prayer Breakfast, an annual event that brings together religious and political leaders from across the country, served as a fitting venue for Trump’s remarks on America’s divine purpose. His speech highlighted his vision of a renewed America, one that, in his view, is once again poised to fulfill its God-given destiny.
His call for Americans to reaffirm their identity as a divinely ordained people is likely to resonate with his supporters, many of whom share his belief in American exceptionalism and the central role of faith in the nation’s founding and future.

I do believe God heard our prayers in President’s election. And as our leader, he is affirming what many believe that God is in control and has a plan and a purpose for all mankind, and certainly nations that look to God for wisdom and guidance.
