President Donald Trump made a bold move in reshaping the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts by appointing conservative firebrand Richard Grenell as Interim Executive Director. The announcement, made public on February 10 through a post on Trump’s social media platform, Truth Social, marks the latest step in his efforts to overhaul the prestigious institution.
“Ric shares my Vision for a GOLDEN AGE of American Arts and Culture, and will be overseeing the daily operations of the Center,” Trump wrote, expressing his enthusiasm for the new direction he plans to steer the Kennedy Center toward. Trump emphasized his desire for a major shift in the facility’s offerings, stating, “NO MORE DRAG SHOWS, OR OTHER ANTI-AMERICAN PROPAGANDA — ONLY THE BEST. RIC, WELCOME TO SHOW BUSINESS!”
Grenell, a prominent conservative figure, previously served as Trump’s ambassador to Germany, acting director of national intelligence, and special envoy for Serbia-Kosovo relations during Trump’s first term. Grenell’s appointment as the Kennedy Center’s Interim Executive Director solidifies his position as a key player in Trump’s administration. In December, he was also named the Presidential Envoy for Special Missions.
In a post made on February 7, Trump revealed his intention to lead the Kennedy Center’s board as chairman and announced a purge of several board members appointed under the Biden administration. These included Karine Jean-Pierre, former press secretary for President Biden, and senior advisor Mike Donilon. Following their ouster, both figures were moved to the “Emeritus Trustees” category on the Kennedy Center’s website, an honorary designation for former trustees.
“Just last year, the Kennedy Center featured Drag Shows specifically targeting our youth — THIS WILL STOP,” Trump wrote in his Truth Social post. He further emphasized that the Kennedy Center, in his view, must serve as a beacon of American culture, reflecting “the brightest STARS on its stage from all across our Nation.”
Additionally, reports suggest that following Trump’s push for a shift in programming, the Kennedy Center’s website scrubbed references to certain past left-wing events, raising questions about the future direction of its content. However, as of yet, the Kennedy Center has not commented on these changes or provided an official statement regarding the removal of certain materials from their site.
Trump’s leadership overhaul at the Kennedy Center follows his broader strategy to return cultural institutions towards traditional fanfare, artistry and pageantry and away from overt and unconventional left-wing political messaging that has overtaken so many hubs of entertainment. Trump has signaled his commitment to ensuring that the arts in America reflect a perspective that, according to the former president, better serves American values and culture.
While Trump has a robust political agenda, he’s made it abundantly clear in the first weeks of his return to office that he’s laser-focused on the culture war that the progressive left seemed to be winning until relatively recently. As the tides change and Americans reject DEI and other left wing social justice messaging in droves, and companies respond, Trump is capitalizing on this change in public opinion, and actively trying to restore a sense of patriotism and quality that has been all but eradicated from show business.
