Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump’s plans to transform an uninhabited Albanian island into a luxury resort destination are running into growing opposition from environmental activists, local residents, and government critics who accuse officials of prioritizing foreign investment over conservation.

The project, which would be on Sazan Island off Albania’s southern coast, would involve approximately $1.6 billion in development and create a sprawling luxury resort featuring more than 10,000 hotel rooms. While supporters see the investment as a potential economic boon, opponents have staged demonstrations across the country, warning that the project could permanently alter.

TUESDAY PDB – Leaked documents a ‘very serious’ risk to national security, Pentagon says. The online leaks of scores of highly classified intelligence documents about the Ukraine war are a disaster.

And they clearly came from within Biden’s defense department (DOD).

According to NPR, they appear to be “briefing slides — put together daily for top Pentagon and national security officials — focused on Ukraine, with maps and charts pertaining to their troops and weapons.”

AND AS EXPECTED – Team Biden doesn’t know extent of classified Pentagon document leak. The White House is scrambling to manage the fallout from the leaked classified materials.

MEANWHILE, THE IMPACTS OF THE CLASSIFIED DOCS’ LEAK IS GLOBAL – How US friends and foes have responded to leaked Pentagon documents. Washington’s appetite for intelligence on friends and adversaries alike is well known to foreign governments — and periodic leaks of classified information help remind them.

FOR YOUR EYES ONLY – Here’s a roundup of other developing stories.

Not the President’s Daily Brief, but almost as good – PAUL’S DAILY BRIEFING – the PDB:

NATIONAL SECURITY

LONG OVERDUE – Biden ends COVID national emergency AFTER Congress acts. The U.S. national overreaction to respond to COVID-19 has ended.

US not ready to quickly produce and ship weapon systems, panel says. It no longer can quickly produce needed wartime assets, like 155 mm artillery shells, or to repair vital sophisticated systems, like radar, rapidly in theater.

CHINA THREAT

China military ‘ready to fight’ after drills near Taiwan. Its military declared Monday it is “ready to fight” after completing three days of large-scale combat exercises that simulated sealing off the island in response to the Taiwanese president’s trip to the U.S. last week.

BUT – Chinese aircraft, ships remain around Taiwan after drills end. CHICOM warplanes and navy ships were still in the waters around Taiwan after the end of three days of war games, as Taiwan’s president criticized Beijing for its “irresponsible” behavior.

PODCAST: China retaliates against Taiwan with military exercise. It sent warships and fighter jets toward Taiwan.

RUSSIA THREAT – UKRAINE WAR

As spring offensive nears, Ukraine is drafting reinforcements. The troops could show up almost anywhere, any time.

Ukrainian tank drivers eagerly await Western rides: ‘More comfortable than a Rolls-Royce.’ As anticipation builds for a counteroffensive, Ukrainian forces are desperate to lay their hands on Western tanks that could help turn the war’s tide.

Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 412. The Moscow-installed head of the part of Ukraine’s Donetsk region occupied by Russia said Russian forces control “more than 75 percent” of Bakhmut.

How Washington can make the most of Finland’s NATO membership. Its accession to NATO provides the alliance with a capable, well-trained military that is poised to defend its 832-mile border with Russia, but integration with NATO is needed.

SPACE THREAT

US Space Force to simplify timelines, purchases as launches surge. Its acquisition plan for its next phase of National Security Space Launch contracts will make it easier for the Space Development Agency to buy and schedule launch missions.

INTERNATIONAL SECURITY

US, Philippines hold largest war drills near disputed waters. The annual drills by the longtime treaty allies called Balikatan will run up to April 28 and involve more than 17,600 military personnel.

F-15Es deploy to Kadena as F-22s, F-16s head home. F-15E Strike Eagles deployed to Japan in April, joining F-35s to bolster the Air Force’s fighter fleet on the strategic island in the western Pacific.

WHOA! NOT WITH THE BILLIONS IN MILITARY AID US GIVES EGYPT EVERY YEAR – Egypt secretly planned to supply rockets to Russia, leaked US document says. President Abdel Fatah El-Sisi in February planned to produce 40,000 rockets for Russia and instructed officials to keep production and shipment secret “to avoid problems with the West.”

BRIT NUKES, UKRAINE AND CHINA – UK national security review sensibly balances nukes, Ukraine, Pacific. The director of the Mike Rogers Center for Intelligence & Global Affairs sees prudence in the UK’s most recent strategic review, though challenges loom.

BACKTRACKING – Netanyahu reverses firing of defense minister amid tension. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reversed his decision to fire his defense minister over criticism of the government’s contentious plan to overhaul the judiciary.

US MILITARY

How the US Navy prioritized readiness – and got more ships too. What happens when the chief of naval operations wants more money for readiness — maintenance, spare parts, munitions, and training time — to create a more prepared fleet, but lawmakers prefer to buy more ships?

HAS IT LOST ITS WAY? – How the nation’s Corps of Marines has lost its way. Unlike force structure and equipment, which can be rebuilt if lost, ethos, once extinguished, is gone forever.
