ANALYSIS – Even as the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) rapidly builds up its current fleet of warships – including recently launching its first real aircraft carrier – the Fujian – China is pushing the technology envelope.
Its top naval scientist is proposing a Star Wars-style ‘supership’ for the PLAN that will use nuclear energy to power railguns, lasers, and high-powered microwave weapons.
The futuristic warship would use breakthrough technologies that would bring “science fiction to the real world,” according to the South Morning China Post (SMCP).
The Pentagon, including the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), is also working on all these new technologies. The question is – who is ahead – the U.S. or China?
Rear Admiral Ma Weiming, the leader behind China’s most advanced naval technologies, unveiled a conceptual blueprint of a futuristic warship which he says is unlike any ship the world had seen.
“It will completely overturn the combat formation of naval fleets that has been in place for over a hundred years,” Ma said in a peer-reviewed paper, the South Morning China Post reported.
The Chinese ship’s new technology would “cleverly and effectively transform the energy from the ship’s power source – nuclear energy – into the electromagnetic energy needed to power” the weapons, Ma wrote.
“Currently, naval combat platforms around the world, aircraft carrier groups, have been made more complicated by the diversity of tasks they must perform. This makes it harder for them to coordinate their actions effectively. These vessels are also expensive to build and operate,” added the SCMP.
However, the admiral argued, these new technologies and capabilities would turn a single ship into an “all-purpose” platform that can perform “the traditional tasks of a fleet of conventional ships.”
In his paper, Ma did not say how long it would take to develop and build the weapons or the ship, but he did claim that China has developed basic technologies for it, such as an electromagnetic launch system for weapons.
China’s latest aircraft carrier the Type 003, known as the Fujian, reportedly employs an electromagnetic catapult launch system (CATOBAR), as does the USS Ford, America’s latest supercarrier.
Ma’s boldest claim may be that the rail guns the PLAN wants could hit targets in near space at speeds up to Mach 7 (seven times the speed of sound), and the electromagnetic-launched missiles could load like an automatic rifle.
The PLAN has carried out large railgun weapons tests at sea, says Ma, and the Naval University of Engineering in China has already made several breakthroughs in developing smaller electromagnetic guns.
“At present, China has solved all the key technologies of the electromagnetic launch system for weapon payloads on various types of combat platforms, including vehicle-mounted, shipborne and underwater systems,” Ma wrote.
Those are a lot of unproven claims. But by stealing so much bleeding edge western technology and secrets, China could in fact be that far advanced with these futuristic capabilities.
Hopefully, the Pentagon is still a step or two ahead.
