Arkansas senator cites family and Senate leadership goals in decision.
Senator Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), previously a front-runner for Secretary of Defense, has informed President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team that he will not accept any roles in the upcoming administration, opting to remain in the Senate. Cotton is currently running for the position of GOP conference chair, the third-highest leadership post, against Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa).
Cotton, who has two young sons, reportedly expressed a desire to prioritize his family, wishing to avoid a move that could disrupt their lives. Additionally, he remains focused on his current Senate responsibilities and is confident about securing a key leadership position next week, as Republicans prepare to take control.
A source close to the senator who spoke with Fox News on Thursday said that Trump respects Cotton’s decision and appreciates his continued support in the Senate, emphasizing that Cotton “remains aligned” with the president-elect on critical issues.
Speculation Continues Over Potential Cabinet Picks
As the Trump team evaluates other candidates, there is growing speculation about who might fill key roles in a potential administration. Familiar faces are reportedly under consideration for several Cabinet positions. Former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson may reprise his role, as could Betsy DeVos as Secretary of Education. Meanwhile, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has emerged as a possible nominee for Secretary of Defense.
In addition to returning figures, Trump’s team is also evaluating new candidates. North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum is being considered for Secretary of the Interior or Secretary of Energy. Senator Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) is a contender for Secretary of State, while Robert F. Kennedy Jr. could be selected for a position in either the Department of Agriculture or Health and Human Services.
As Trump’s team moves toward formal announcements, the public is watching closely to see how familiar allies and fresh faces could shape his potential administration.

Good for Senator Cotton, he’s needed more in the Senate than at DoD. President Trump should not pull out ANY senators (except maybe McConnell) as they are needed where they are.

Truthfully ! I voted Republican ? Anything but proud of it. Personally I think there was no real good choice ! Being said, went with the least destructive choice. I have read some really off the wall possibilities that may take place before Trump takes over. Two of which are : A successful attempt on his LIFE ? The other WWIII before his take over ? My ??? is there any possibility of either or ???????
A QUESTION ? Is there ANY possibility of SOME THING delaying the new TRUMP administration taking over in JANUARY ?? Only reason ? PROVEN FACTOO in this WORLD today ? ANYTHING is POSSIBLE . I think this a subject worth hearing.
