CHINA THREAT
Guarding the Pacific: How Washington can counter China in the Solomons and beyond. By now, it should be abundantly clear that Solomon Islands, under Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare, is abandoning democracy and falling ever deeper into the orbit of the People’s Republic of China. Since coming to power in April 2019, the Sogavare government has taken a series of steps increasingly hostile to the interests of the United States, its allies, and broader regional stability. Fortunately, the dangers inherent in Chinese dominance of the Solomons seems to have aroused Washington to a heightened appreciation of the strategic importance of the South Pacific. RUSSIA THREAT
Pentagon sending Excalibur guided artillery, more HIMARS to Ukraine. The Pentagon said Tuesday it’s arming Ukraine with Excalibur satellite-guided artillery rounds and four more High-Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems to help repel Russia’s invasion force. US denies Ukraine’s request for long-range missiles in latest arms gift. Ukraine can reach the “vast majority” of targets with what they already have, a Pentagon official says.
Russia’s Putin signs laws annexing occupied Ukrainian regions. Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed laws to formally absorb four Ukrainian regions into Russia, following referendums in those areas that Kyiv and its Western allies called a meaningless “sham.”
Ukraine considering restarting Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant. Ukrainian officials are considering whether to restart two reactors at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station in order to ensure that its safety equipment remains undamaged and operational, the head of Ukraine’s nuclear power operator told AP in an interview Tuesday. Ukraine hammers Russian forces into retreat on east and south fronts. Ukrainian troops on Tuesday accelerated their military advances on two fronts, pushing Russian forces into retreat in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions to the east and in the Kherson region to the south.
Russia touts rapid mobilization but faces dilemma as Ukrainians advance. Moscow could rush in ill-prepared troops now or wait to send better-trained ones next year and risk further Ukrainian gains, Western military analysts say.
NORTH KOREAN THREAT
South Korean missile crashes during drill with US. A South Korean ballistic missile malfunctioned and crashed into the ground early Wednesday during a live-fire drill with the United States.
US Marine F-35Bs, Japanese fighters fly show of force mission following North Korean missile test. Eleven U.S. and Japanese fighters flew a show of force mission over the Sea of Japan following a North Korean missile test over the Japanese home islands, a Pentagon spokesman said on Tuesday.
INTERNATIONAL SECURITY
Iron Beam, Israel’s laser air defense system, could be ready in 2-3 years. “We don’t have a technology problem or a scientific problem anymore… it’s now an engineering problem. The science is there, we’ve shown that it works,” said Rafael executive Michael Lurie.
PENTAGON ‘WOKE WATCH’
Republicans vow to put ‘woke’ military in crosshairs if they win in November. Republicans will have more opportunities to take aim at Biden administration defense policies they’ve decried as “woke,” including the military’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate, if they take control of Congress in November’s midterm elections.
