Are politics damaging US military recruiting? Making the armed forces ‘inclusive' gets it backward. In “What if They Gave a War and Everybody Was Woke?” (op-ed, July 30), Jimmy Byrn argues that woke military policies are turning away people who are traditionally more likely to join the armed forces. I am one of those people.
HOMELAND SECURITY
Congressman goes after Austal USA for former China ties; $3.3b contract hangs in balance. A Florida congressman is accusing a trusted Navy contractor of having shady connections with China and is calling on the homeland security secretary to investigate, as the war over a top US Coast Guard shipbuilding program escalates.
CHINA THREAT
11 Chinese ballistic missiles fired near Taiwan, US embarks USS America from Japan. The People's Liberation Army Rocket Force has fired 11 ballistic missiles into waters surrounding Taiwan as part of a series of military exercises, the Ministry of Defense in Taipei said in a Thursday statement.
China sanctions Pelosi, sends 100 warplanes to Taiwan invasion drills. China said Friday that more than 100 warplanes and 10 warships have taken part in live-fire military drills surrounding Taiwan over the past two days, while announcing sanctions on U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi over her visit to the self-governing island earlier this week.
WEAK BIDEN – Pentagon again delays nuclear missile test amid Chinese drills near Taiwan. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has again ordered the Pentagon to postpone a planned test launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile, this time amid increased tension with China over Taiwan, according to a department and a congressional source.
RUSSIA THREAT – UKRAINE WAR
Ukraine rejects Amnesty International report accusing troops of endangering civilians. Government officials in Kyiv dismissed a report by Amnesty International critical of Ukraine's military as “fake” and “propaganda” after the human rights organization argued the country's wartime tactics endanger civilians and violate international law.
Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 163. Russia said on Friday it was ready to discuss prisoner swaps with the United States through an existing diplomatic channel, a day after basketball star Brittney Griner was handed a nine-year prison sentence for a drugs offence. Russia may launch an offensive in the southern Ukrainian region of Kherson to try to win back momentum in the war, and it has been building up forces there, Ukrainian General Oleksiy Gromov said.
Why military aid to Ukraine doesn't always get to the front lines: “Like 30% of it reaches its final destination”. In a war being fought largely in World War II era trenches, with Soviet ammunition, the vast influx of modern NATO weapons and military supplies from the West into Ukraine has proven to be among the largest determinants of whether territory is lost, or gained, along Ukraine's embattled border region with Russia.
Ukraine under pressure in east as NATO chief says Russia must not win. Ukraine said on Thursday it had been forced to cede some territory in the east of the country in the face of a Russian offensive, and the head of the NATO military alliance said Moscow must not be allowed to win the war.
Ukraine braces for attack as Russian troops mass in south. As Ukraine has pushed forward around Kherson, Russia appears to be pouring forces in. With striking Republican support, the U.S. Senate voted to approve NATO's expansion to include Finland and Sweden.
NORTH KOREA THREAT
North Korea ‘paves the way' for more nuclear tests, UN report says. North Korea made preparations for a nuclear test during the first six months of this year, according to an excerpt of a confidential United Nations report seen by Reuters on Thursday.
INTERNATIONAL SECURITY
Rwanda backing M23 rebels in DRC: UN experts. Rwandan troops attacked soldiers inside DR Congo and aided the M23 rebel group with weapons and support, a United Nations group of experts said, citing “solid evidence” despite reiterated denials by Kigali.
US MILITARY AND SPACE
The Marine Corps' new plan will not beat China in a fight for Taiwan. Information obtained from open-source literature reveals examples of how the new EABO doctrine is destined to fail, this Marine veteran claims.
