NATO Ally Closes Airspace To US Military Aircraft Over Iran Conflict

Spain has escalated its standoff with the United States by blocking U.S. military aircraft involved in the Iran conflict from using its airspace, marking a significant rupture between Washington and a key NATO ally.

Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles confirmed Monday that Madrid has denied both airspace access and the use of jointly operated U.S.-Spanish bases for any operations tied to the war in Iran.

“This was made perfectly clear to the American military and forces from the very beginning,” Robles told reporters. “Therefore, neither the bases are authorized, nor, of course, is the use of Spanish airspace authorized for any actions related to the war in Iran.”

The move expands on an earlier decision by Spain to block U.S. access to the strategically important Rota and Morón military bases in southern Spain—installations long considered critical hubs for American operations across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. By extending the restriction to its airspace, Spain is further limiting U.S. logistical options in the region.

The decision underscores a growing clash between President Donald Trump and Spain’s left-wing government under Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, which has emerged as one of the most vocal European critics of U.S. and Israeli military actions in the Middle East.

Sánchez has described the Iran war as “illegal,” “reckless” and “unjust,” and his government has framed its refusal to cooperate as a matter of international law and national sovereignty.

“This decision is part of the decision already made by the Spanish government not to participate in or contribute to a war which was initiated unilaterally and against international law,” Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo said in a radio interview.

Robles echoed that position, saying, “I think everyone knows Spain’s position; it’s very clear,” and calling the war in Iran “profoundly illegal and profoundly unjust.”

The escalating dispute has drawn a sharp response from Trump, who previously threatened economic retaliation after Spain denied access to its bases.

“We’re going to cut off all trade with Spain,” Trump said. “We don’t want anything to do with Spain.”

Despite the latest restrictions, a White House official downplayed the impact of Spain’s decision, suggesting U.S. operations would continue unaffected.

“The United States Military is meeting or surpassing all of its goals under Operation Epic Fury and does not need help from Spain or anyone else,” the official told Fox News.

The United States maintains a significant military presence in Spain under longstanding bilateral agreements, including Naval Station Rota and Morón Air Base. Naval Station Rota, in particular, supports U.S. Navy operations in the Mediterranean and hosts warships tied to the U.S. Sixth Fleet, some of which have been active in the broader Iran conflict.

Spaish leadership, like all other European Leaders (I use this term loosely) are mooching, ungrateful cowards. They are like dogs the the tail between their legs. U.S. Needs to leave Nato and get out of ungrateful countries like Spain, U.K. And Germany ASAP. Enough is enough.
