Tensions between the United States and Cuba are rapidly escalating after new reporting claimed the communist regime has been building up military drone capabilities just 90 miles from American shores, while the Trump administration simultaneously intensifies pressure on Havana over security concerns and its ties to U.S. adversaries.
According to Axios, classified intelligence indicates Cuba has been acquiring attack drones from Russia and Iran since 2023 and positioning them “in strategic locations across the island.”
Potential targets reportedly include the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, American military vessels, and even Key West, Florida.
Axios quoted a senior U.S. official warning of the implications.
“When we think about those types of technologies being that close, and a range of bad actors from terror groups to drug cartels to Iranians to the Russians, it’s concerning,” the official said, adding that it’s “a growing threat.”
The report arrives as President Trump continues pursuing a maximum-pressure strategy aimed at forcing political and economic changes in Cuba. Administration officials have suggested the drone intelligence could become a major factor in determining the next phase of U.S. action. Axios reported that one senior U.S. official said the intelligence “could become a pretext for U.S. military action” if the Trump administration determines the drone buildup — along with the presence of Iranian military advisers in Havana — represents a serious enough threat.
Adding to the pressure campaign, CIA Director John Ratcliffe reportedly recently traveled to Cuba for high-level discussions with Cuban leadership.

A CIA official told Axios:
“Director Ratcliffe made clear that Cuba can no longer serve as a platform for adversaries to advance hostile agendas in our hemisphere.”
The administration’s actions are extending beyond diplomacy.
According to CBS News, the Department of Justice is preparing an indictment against Raúl Castro, Cuba’s 94-year-old former president and brother of Fidel Castro.

The expected charges stem from the 1996 shootdown of two civilian aircraft operated by Brothers to the Rescue, a Miami-based humanitarian organization that searched for Cubans attempting to flee the communist nation.
The planes were reportedly operating outside Cuban airspace when Cuban fighter jets opened fire. Four people were killed.
Although Raúl Castro officially stepped down from leadership in 2021, he remains one of the most influential figures in Cuba.
The standoff comes at an especially vulnerable moment for Havana.
Cuba is facing a worsening energy crisis after oil shipments from Venezuela sharply declined. The situation intensified after the United States seized control of Venezuelan oil sales following the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro earlier this year.
Maduro was reportedly captured during a U.S. military raid after facing multiple U.S. charges, including narco-terrorism.
Trump administration officials argue Cuba’s deepening relationships with Russia, China, and Iran have increasingly transformed the island into a national security concern.
Earlier this month, Ratcliffe reportedly delivered a direct message to Castro from the president.
“Prepared to seriously engage on economic and security issues, but only if Cuba makes fundamental changes.”
Trump himself has publicly floated the possibility of major action against the regime, including what he described in March as a “friendly takeover.”
With reports of armed drones, alleged Iranian involvement, and a mounting pressure campaign from Washington, the long-frozen U.S.-Cuba relationship appears headed toward one of its most volatile chapters in decades.

Remember what happened during the ‘Cuban Missile Crisis’!
We stopped this attempt to be able to attack the U.S. from Cuba back then.
Maybe it’s time to ‘go there’ again.
Yes, we had to take our missiles out of Turkey in compensation, but we got their’s out of Cuba.
And there was a relative peace for many years after that ( I’m old and I clearly remember that. I was in high school at the time ).
If Cuba or any other country should strike us, we MUST strike back.
And ‘Gitmo’ has been American territory for at least around 140 years!
What is worse … a large confrontation, or a loss of our freedom and becoming slaves to another culture … a communist culture?
I also remember the words by Patrick Henry … “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death”!
Since there are no ‘U.S. born’ Americans who have ever been slaves, it’s hard for people to consider the reason for that sentence.
They WILL if ever facing that conundrum.
