On Friday, The New York Times published explosive details about a classified U.S. military operation authorized by President Donald Trump during his first term.
In 2019, SEAL Team 6’s elite Red Squadron — the same unit that killed Osama bin Laden — was ordered to infiltrate North Korea and plant a covert electronic surveillance device near Kim Jong Un’s location. The mission’s goal: to intercept high-level regime communications.
According to reports, the nighttime mission on a rocky North Korean shore quickly went south at the very moment everything needed to go right:
The mission had the potential to provide the United States with a stream of valuable intelligence. But it meant putting American commandos on North Korean soil — a move that, if detected, not only could sink negotiations but also could lead to a hostage crisis or an escalating conflict with a nuclear-armed foe.
It was so risky that it required the president’s direct approval.
Using faulty thermal goggles and without real-time aerial reconnaissance — no drones, no satellite feed — the SEALs reportedly mistook local shellfish fishermen approaching in a boat with searchlights for enemy security forces. In the darkness, they opened fire, killing two or possibly three civilians.
To keep the North Korean regime from uncovering the botched mission, the SEALs slipped back into the sea, retrieved the bodies, and punctured the victims’ lungs so the corpses would sink — an effort to erase every trace of their presence.
It was a high-risk job with limited support — the kind that can turn deadly in seconds.
The Times continues:
The 2019 operation has never been publicly acknowledged, or even hinted at, by the United States or North Korea. The details remain classified and are being reported here for the first time. The Trump administration did not notify key members of Congress who oversee intelligence operations, before or after the mission. The lack of notification may have violated the law.
So far, the White House has declined to comment.
Despite the outcome, internal reviews concluded the SEALs had acted within the rules of engagement. The mission was classified from top to bottom. The public never knew — until now.
