The House of Representatives on Wednesday approved a war powers resolution aimed at ending unauthorized U.S. military involvement in Iran, marking the most significant congressional challenge yet to President Donald Trump’s handling of the conflict.

The measure, sponsored by Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.) invokes the 1973 War Powers Resolution and would require the administration to obtain explicit authorization from Congress before continuing hostilities against Iran, except in cases involving an imminent threat to the United States. On Tuesday, President Donald Trump announced during a news conference that the U.S. military “shot out” a drug boat from Venezuela in the southern Caribbean.

“Over the last few minutes, [we] literally shot out a boat, a drug-carrying boat,” Trump said during the news conference. “A lot of drugs in that boat. And you’ll be seeing that, and you’ll be reading about that. It just happened moments ago.”

Secretary of State Marco Rubio later posted to X sharing additional details, noting the hit was a “lethal strike.”
