WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump announced that the United States will extend its ceasefire with Iran indefinitely while maintaining a strict naval blockade, as peace talks falter and uncertainty deepens over Tehran’s willingness to negotiate.
In a statement, Trump said U.S. forces would “hold our attack” and continue the ceasefire until Iran presents a unified proposal and negotiations are concluded, signaling a shift from earlier warnings that the truce might not be extended.
At the same time, the administration made clear that military pressure will remain in place. Trump ordered the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports to continue, underscoring a strategy that combines diplomacy with sustained economic and military leverage.
Talks Falter as Iran Holds Back
The announcement comes as planned peace talks in Pakistan appear to be unraveling. Iran has so far declined to formally commit to negotiations, with officials citing concerns over the continued U.S. blockade and what they describe as inconsistent signals from Washington.
Vice President JD Vance, who was expected to lead the U.S. delegation, postponed his trip to Islamabad after it became clear Iranian representatives were unlikely to attend.
The collapse of those talks has left both sides in a holding pattern, with neither prepared to escalate immediately but no clear diplomatic breakthrough in sight.
Blockade Remains Central Pressure Point
The U.S. naval blockade — imposed earlier this month — remains a central sticking point in negotiations.
Trump has repeatedly said the blockade will stay in place until a final agreement is reached, describing it as essential to forcing Iran to the table and securing concessions on its nuclear program.
Iran, however, has called the blockade unacceptable and has warned it will not negotiate under what it views as coercive conditions.
The standoff has already had global implications, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical oil transit route that has seen disruptions tied to the broader conflict.
From Brink of War to Open-Ended Truce
The decision to extend the ceasefire marks a notable pivot from Trump’s earlier rhetoric. The president suggested he was unlikely to prolong the truce and warned that military action could resume quickly if talks failed.
Now, the administration appears to be buying time — allowing diplomacy to continue while keeping military options firmly on the table.
Analysts say the move reflects a balancing act: avoiding immediate escalation while maintaining enough pressure to compel Iran to engage.
For now, the ceasefire remains in place with no clear end date, but the underlying conflict remains unresolved.

I am one of President Trump’s most staunch supporters. However, I do not understand why he wants to continue to try to negotiate with a regime that has no interest in negotiating. Am I missing something??
It appears to me that there are at least two factions in Iran who are vying for control. The IRGC have the weapons and the civilian forces have the microphone. I’m guessing but it seems the president’s plan is to extend the ceasefire while maintaining the blockade in order to pressure the hardliners into submitting to the civilian authority.
he ceasefire can not be for more than a few days. Pres. Trump is not only dealing with the Iranians he also has to guard his back from certain Democrats who are opposing his every action. They are undermining him at every turn . Pres. Trump must move quickly and decisively. he Iranians are notorious for delaying tactics against their foes. Europe and the UN are also of no use. They will jockey with their support trying to et a better deal from Iran because they do not fear the US. additionally, we have a moral obligation to the people of Iran we must make it clear to the IRGC and Mullahs that they must not kill anymore Iranians
Don’t wait too long, Mr. Trump! Iran is vying for time!
If the libs get too much power after the next elections, they’ll certainly make it harder to do what is so very necessary to do!
The Muslims of Iran will be able to, once again, develop ‘nukes’ and long range missiles as soon as they can.
That, when they send them onto our country ( which they certainly will ), will be the start of WW 3!
NOT A GOOD THING!
