President Donald Trump is urging Israel and Iran to halt military operations immediately after the two adversaries exchanged direct strikes for the first time since a U.S.-brokered ceasefire took effect earlier this year, raising concerns that a broader regional conflict could once again spiral out of control.
The renewed fighting began over the weekend when Iran launched nearly 30 ballistic missiles toward northern Israel, according to Israeli officials. The attack reportedly targeted military installations and a facility near Haifa, prompting a swift Israeli response.
Israel responded with a series of airstrikes that officials said targeted Iranian missile infrastructure and air defense systems. The strikes marked the most significant direct military exchange between Israel and Iran since the ceasefire reached in the aftermath of the U.S.-Iran war in April.
Trump Pushes for Immediate De-Escalation
As reports of missile launches and retaliatory strikes emerged, Trump publicly called on both sides to stand down and allow diplomatic efforts to continue.
“Immediately stop shooting,” the president wrote on social media.

Trump later stated that both Israel and Iran appeared interested in reaching an immediate ceasefire and said final peace negotiations were actively underway.
In a Truth Social post Monday morning, Trump reiterated his call for both nations to cease hostilities, arguing that negotiators were close to reaching a broader agreement despite the latest flare-up.
The president also emphasized that the U.S. naval blockade on Iran would remain in place until what he described as a “Final Deal” is achieved, maintaining pressure on Tehran while diplomatic discussions continue.
Trump warned that progress toward peace could still be derailed by miscalculations, saying both sides remain vulnerable to actions driven by “ignorance or stupidity.”

Netanyahu Urged Not to Expand Operations
According to Axios, Trump also spoke directly with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and encouraged him not to broaden Israel’s military campaign against Iran.
“I am going to call Bibi right now and tell him not to retaliate,” Trump told the outlet. “Each of them had their fun. Israel had its strike, and Iran had its strike. We don’t need another one.”
New Strikes Reported in Lebanon
Despite calls for restraint, reports surfaced Monday of additional Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon.
Videos circulating online appeared to show a large plume of black smoke rising near the village of Khirbat al-Dweir, an area located between Sidon and Nabatieh.

The region has been repeatedly targeted during the ongoing Lebanon conflict as Israel continues operations against Hezbollah infrastructure. While ceasefire agreements have periodically reduced fighting since late 2024, tensions along the Israel-Lebanon border remain high.
First Direct Israel-Iran Exchange Since Ceasefire
The weekend confrontation marked the first direct military exchange between Israel and Iran since the United States and Iran agreed to a conditional two-week ceasefire on April 7-8, 2026, in a deal brokered by Pakistan and later extended indefinitely by President Trump.
While tensions have persisted through Iranian-backed groups operating across the region, direct attacks between the two countries had been avoided until now.
Iran said its missile barrage was retaliation for Israeli operations linked to Lebanon. Israel, meanwhile, defended its actions as necessary to counter threats posed by Iranian-backed forces near its borders.
Israeli officials reported that most incoming missiles were intercepted before reaching their intended targets.
Iran Signals Pause but Issues Warning
Following the exchange, Iranian officials indicated that the latest round of military operations had concluded for the time being.
However, Tehran warned that additional retaliation could follow if Israeli strikes continue.
Iranian leaders accused Israel of undermining ongoing diplomatic efforts and said the country remains prepared for a prolonged confrontation if necessary.
At the same time, Israel placed its military on heightened alert and signaled that it would respond forcefully to any future attacks.

Peace Talks Continue Amid Uncertainty
Despite the renewed violence, the Trump administration insists negotiations remain on track.
Trump has maintained that the latest exchange does not signal the collapse of diplomatic efforts and has continued to express confidence that a broader agreement remains achievable.
The latest hostilities nevertheless highlight the fragile nature of the current ceasefire and the significant challenges facing negotiators seeking to prevent a wider conflict involving Israel, Iran, Hezbollah, and other armed groups operating throughout the Middle East.
With tensions elevated, regional stability may depend on whether both sides heed calls for restraint in the coming days as diplomatic channels remain open.
