President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he has ordered the immediate dismissal of the Boards of Visitors at the United States Military Academy at West Point, along with the boards of the U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy, and U.S. Coast Guard Academy. The decision is part of a broader effort to purge the service academies of progressive influence in the military, which he argues has undermined its effectiveness and discipline.
“Our Service Academies have been infiltrated by Woke Leftist Ideologues over the last four years. I have ordered the immediate dismissal of the Board of Visitors for the Army, Air Force, Navy, and Coast Guard,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social. “We will have the strongest Military in History, and that begins by appointing new individuals to these Boards. We must make the Military Academies GREAT AGAIN!”
Trump’s decision to remove the Boards of Visitors follows his criticism of progressive ideology in the U.S. military, worrying that the military is becoming too focused on social issues at the expense of readiness. The former president’s remarks were likely influenced by a series of incidents and policies under the Biden administration that reflected this ideological shift.
One of the most notable changes at West Point under President Biden’s tenure was the revision of the academy’s mission statement, which led to the removal of the iconic phrase “Duty, Honor, Country” – a mantra that has long represented the core values of the institution. The omission of this phrase sparked backlash among many veterans and alumni, who see it as a departure from the fundamental principles that have shaped West Point graduates for generations. Critics, including retired generals and colonels who are alumni of the academy, have accused the school of instilling socialist and anti-American ideals in students, a claim that Trump has echoed in his ongoing critique of military education under the Biden administration.
West Point, along with other military academies, has also faced lawsuits regarding its consideration of race in the admissions process. These lawsuits argue that the practice of factoring race into admission decisions is discriminatory and undermines merit-based selection. The controversy surrounding these policies has contributed to Trump’s assertion that the military academies are prioritizing progressive ideals over the traditional values of discipline, unity, and meritocracy.
In his Truth Social post, Trump outlined his vision for the future of military education in America. “We will restore the Warrior Ethos and meritocracy that made our military the strongest in the world,” he stated. His comments reflect his broader aim of ensuring that the military remains focused on warfighting and readiness, rather than engaging in social or political debates. The former president has long been an advocate for a military that prioritizes strength, unity, and national defense, and he has pledged to return the Department of Defense to these principles during his second term.
Trump’s Department of Defense Secretary, Pete Hegseth, shares this vision. During his confirmation hearing, Hegseth stated that his mission was to “bring the warrior culture back to the Department of Defense.” He emphasized his commitment to focusing on “warfighting, lethality, meritocracy, standards, and readiness” – values that he and Trump believe are essential to keeping America safe.
“The strength of our military is our unity—our shared purpose—not our differences,” Hegseth added, reaffirming his stance on a military that focuses on operational preparedness above all else.
By purging these boards of individuals he considers to be “Woke Leftist Ideologues,” Trump hopes to reshape the culture of the service academies, ensuring that they remain true to their core mission: to produce disciplined, capable leaders who are committed to the defense of the United States and its values.
