The White House has confirmed that Hamas has taken an unknown number of American citizens hostage since the Palestinian terrorist group launched a surprise cross-border raid against Israel on Saturday.
At least 14 American citizens have died in the fighting. According to Jake Sullivan, the White House’s national security adviser, the administration estimates 20 Americans are missing.
In televised remarks from the White House, President Joe Biden called the attack “pure unadulterated evil.”
“This is terrorism,” Biden told the nation:
It’s unclear how many hostages have perished thus far. Elon Musk has allowed graphic video footage of medieval executions of kidnapped civilians and soldiers to spread like wildfire on X.
The combined death toll from the Iranian-backed assault stands in excess of 1,700. Hamas is now threatening to kill the remaining hostages. Israeli officials have responded by drafting 300,000 reservists in preparation for a likely invasion of the Gaza Strip.
The New York Times further reports:
As night fell in Israel, rocket-warning sirens blared in the town of Ashkelon, a coastal city located just north of the Gaza border. Earlier, rockets fired from Gaza targeted Tel Aviv and nearby Ben-Gurion International Airport “in response to the targeting of civilians” by Israel, Hamas said on the Telegram social media platform. There were no immediate reports of damage.
It is not yet clear if or when Israel will order a ground invasion of Gaza, an impoverished coastal enclave ruled by Hamas. The Israeli military said it had recovered the bodies of around 1,500 Palestinian assailants since Saturday morning, offering one of the first clear indications of the size of the assault.
Health officials in Gaza said on Tuesday that 830 Palestinians have been killed and 4,250 others have been wounded in the last four days, though it was unclear how many were civilians. Hamas confirmed that two of its senior officials have been killed by Israeli strikes in Gaza.
