A group of House Democrats is moving to block President Donald Trump from acquiring Greenland, hoping to foil one of the president’s most prominent foreign policy objectives.
Rep. Gabe Amo, D-R.I., announced late Sunday that he has introduced legislation to prevent Trump from using federal funds to purchase Greenland. The bill already has more than 20 Democratic co-sponsors, a number Amo said is expected to grow in the coming days.
“Greenland is not for sale, no matter what Trump says,” Amo wrote on X. “That’s why I led 21 [House Democrats] in introducing the NO NATO for Purchase Act to make sure your taxpayer dollars aren’t spent on Trump’s next property boondoggle.”
According to a publicly available summary, the legislation would prohibit any federal action or expenditure of funds to purchase a North Atlantic Treaty Organization member country or NATO-protected territory. Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark, a NATO member.
The maneuver comes as Trump and his allies continue to argue that bringing Greenland under American control is critical to national security, particularly given growing concerns about Russian and Chinese activity in the Arctic. Trump has advocated acquiring Greenland since his first term in office and has renewed those efforts since returning to the White House.
Last week, Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with officials from Denmark and Greenland, though Danish leaders signaled little progress was made. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said discussions focused on long-term security but acknowledged fundamental disagreements with Washington.
“The president has made his view clear,” Rasmussen told reporters. “And we have a different position.”
At the same time, a bipartisan congressional delegation, made up largely of Democrats, traveled to Denmark over the weekend to meet with government officials during the escalating dispute.
Trump has put continued public pressure on Denmark, writing on Truth Social on Sunday that NATO has warned Copenhagen for years about the Russian threat to Greenland and accusing Denmark of failing to adequately address it. “Now it is time, and it will be done!!!” Trump wrote.
The administration has made clear it prefers to purchase Greenland from Denmark, but Trump has not ruled out the use of military force, a prospect that has unsettled lawmakers from both parties. Critics argue that any military action would violate NATO’s Article V, which obligates members to come to each other’s defense.
Despite the attention surrounding Amo’s bill, it is unlikely to advance in the GOP-controlled House, and its prospects for passage remain slim. Still, the legislation underscores growing congressional resistance to Trump’s Greenland push, even as the president continues to warn of its centrality to security in the Arctic.

The luddites I.e. the democrats, probably would have stopped the U.S. from buying Alaska if President Trump was in office at that time. Now if a democrat proposed the same thing they would have a different opinion. But the democrats can’t think beyond the end of their noses.
That’s because their heads are stuck up you know where on each and every one of them.
So true! China and Russia are going to fill that void. I guess the democrats (marxists) want them closer for their support, don’t they?
The attitude I see from this article is disturbing. Are the remembers interested in international relations or blocking something President Trump has stated that he thinks is a good idea? Greenland has been under effective U.S. control since WWII. IMHO, all it would really take for the U.S. to control Greenland completely is to greatly increase our military presence there. That could be accomplished by treaty and country to country diplomacy. It doesn’t need military action.
It is becoming more and more apparent that the “Democrat” party is anything but. Their major I unifying idea at this time appears to be nothing but obstructing anything President Trump wants to do — bad or good.
