Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas reportedly survived an assassination attempt earlier this morning.
At least one of his bodyguards was killed in the attempt on his life.
The attack was allegedly perpetrated by a Hamas aligned group from the West Bank calling itself “Sons of Abu Jandal.”
A video purporting to show the attack is circulating online.
The ambush came after the group, made up of Palestinian Authority security forces, gave Abbas a 24-hour ultimatum to either announce a call to arms and mobilization against the so-called Israeli occupation or accept a rebellion by those willing to act.
An English translation of the statement reveals it reads in part:
Today, we declare that the Palestinian leadership holds a historical responsibility to announce a direct confrontation with the criminal occupation. If, within 24 hours, our brother Abu Mazen (Mahmoud Abbas) does not issue a clear statement, declaring an open confrontation with the occupation by any means necessary and disavowing the criminal statements made by Blinken, then no one should expect our obedience, no directives will be followed, and loyalty to any agency will cease to exist.
