On Tuesday, anti-Israel agitators interrupted late-night host Stephen Colbert's interview with former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi while she was discussing President Biden, Vice President Harris, and the Democratic National Convention (DNC).
Pelosi joined Colbert's The Late Show for a special episode filmed live from Chicago where the Democratic National Convention is being held. However, the interview was marred by repeated interruptions after a protester yelled out “Free Palestine.”
“There's a protest going on right now,” Colbert said. “We're going to go to commercial break but the subject is on Israel and Palestine and if you'll have a seat, we have to go to the commercial break, but when we come back I'll ask the next question I had on that subject.”
While discussing a potential ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, Pelosi earned applause from the audience after declaring, “War has no role in a civilized society.”
Some in the audience quickly turned though and more began screaming in protest of the Democratic leader.
Watch:
“As you can see from the continuing protests out here, that answer is unsatisfying to some people because they believe that the United States — hold on one second, would you like to respond to what they're saying?” Colbert said, pointing out to the protesters.
Pelosi said she couldn't make out exactly what the group was saying.
“They're screaming, I can't hear them,” she said.
“They've said the United States should not have any role in supplying Israel arms to kill the people of Gaza. That's what they're saying,” Colbert said, earning applause.
Pelosi argued that Israel has a right to defend itself and said she still supports a “two state solution” for the region.
“Israel has a right to defend itself. And the hostages should be returned, but the other part of it that has been so major for all of us for many years is that there must be a two state solution,” she said. “You cannot have peace unless you have two states. Israel, a secure, Democratic, Jewish state in the region and the Palestinians having their own secure country there as well.”
