A group of pro-Palestine protesters carried out an act of vandalism at former U.S. President Donald Trump’s Turnberry golf course on Scotland’s western coast on Saturday. The protest was organized by Palestine Action, a group that describes itself as a “direct action network dismantling British complicity with Israeli apartheid.”
In the early hours of the morning, the protesters painted the message “Gaza is not for sale” on the lawn of the prestigious 800-acre golf course in Turnberry, South Ayrshire. They also spray-painted the clubhouse and damaged the course’s famous greens, including those used in numerous Open Championships. The group posted videos and images of the damage on social media, claiming, “Yesterday, it was ranked #3 golf course in Europe. Today, it’s shut.”
Palestine Action’s spokesperson condemned U.S. President Donald Trump’s statements on Gaza, referring to his administration’s policies as harmful and an attempt to “destroy, ethnically cleanse, and ‘take over’ the Palestinian Gaza Strip.” The group justified its actions by expressing anger at Trump’s treatment of Gaza, calling it an act of resistance against what they describe as U.S.-Israeli colonialism in Palestine. “We reject Donald Trump’s treatment of Gaza as though it were his property to dispose of as he likes,” the spokesperson said. “To make that clear, we have shown him that his own property is not safe from acts of resistance.”
The incident follows remarks made by Trump earlier this year following his return to office, in which he suggested that the U.S. should take over Gaza, turn it into a resort, and resettle its Palestinian inhabitants elsewhere. His comments sparked widespread criticism and were seen by many as an insensitive and misguided approach to the ongoing crisis in the region. Trump later clarified that his intention was to suggest rebuilding Gaza to make it more habitable for its people.
A spokesperson for Trump Turnberry condemned the vandalism as a “childish, criminal act,” and the Scottish police have confirmed they are investigating the incident. The golf course is a major property of Trump’s business empire and has hosted numerous high-profile golfing events.
Eighteen of the group’s members are currently imprisoned in the U.K. under counter-terrorism laws after allegedly costing Israel’s weapons trade millions of pounds in damages.
As authorities investigate the incident, the protest has brought more attention to the deeply divisive issue of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and Trump’s controversial proposal earlier this year. Whether or not such actions will sway public opinion or lead to tangible changes in policy remains to be seen.
