Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed his admiration for President-elect Donald Trump’s strength and leadership, claiming that Trump’s victory over Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 election was not only a testament to his political acumen but also to his mental and physical resilience. Speaking on the “Lex Fridman Podcast” on Sunday, Zelensky pointed to Trump’s ability to rally the American people and demonstrate his capabilities, dismissing concerns about the former president’s age and fitness for office.
“He was stronger. He was much stronger than Kamala Harris,” Zelensky stated, adding that Trump showed the kind of intellectual and physical vitality required to lead a nation. The Ukrainian leader emphasized that, in his view, a strong country needed a strong leader—one who demonstrated both mental and physical robustness.
“He showed that he can intellectually and physically,” Zelensky continued. “It was an important point to show that if you want to have a strong country, you have to be strong. And he was strong.”
Zelensky’s comments come after Trump’s decisive victory, in which he secured every battleground state, as well as a popular vote lead of over 2 million votes. According to the Cook Political Report, Trump’s success could be attributed to voters’ trust and preference for him on key issues like the economy, immigration, and foreign affairs.
Zelensky’s remarks also pointed to Trump’s formidable stamina during his campaign, particularly his prolific number of rallies. The president-elect held a significant number of events across the country, a move that not only energized his base but also underscored his vigor.
Zelensky also highlighted Trump’s intellectual capabilities, suggesting that the former president proved himself mentally sharp throughout the election process. “He is young here and his brains work,” Zelensky said, reaffirming the belief that Trump’s intellectual strength was a key factor in his victory — especially as the sitting president was forced off of the Democratic ticket over concerns about his cognitive state. This sentiment was reflected in the broader public perception of Trump’s ability to handle complex issues, with voters trusting him more than Harris on every major issue with the exception of abortion.
Polling data further supports Zelensky’s assessment of Trump’s strength, particularly on the economy—a key issue in the 2024 election. A Gallup poll published in October showed that nearly 55% of registered voters preferred Trump over Harris when it came to managing the economy, the most pressing issue for Americans at the time. Over 50% of voters rated the economy as “extremely important” in determining their vote, with Trump holding a significant advantage over Harris on this front.
Additionally, Trump led Harris by nine points on immigration and by five points on foreign affairs, according to the same poll. These statistics reflect Trump’s continued popularity among voters who viewed him as better equipped to handle the critical issues facing the nation.
