President Donald Trump has appointed Alina Habba, his former personal attorney and current counselor to the president, as the interim U.S. attorney for the District of New Jersey. Habba succeeds John Giordano, who has been nominated as the U.S. ambassador to Namibia.
In a statement on Truth Social, President Trump expressed confidence in Habba’s capabilities, proclaiming “Alina will lead with the same diligence and conviction that has defined her career, and she will fight tirelessly to secure a Legal System that is both ‘Fair and Just’ for the wonderful people of New Jersey.”
Habba, a Summit, New Jersey native, has been a prominent figure in President Trump’s legal team. She gained recognition for representing Trump in several high-profile cases, including lawsuits against The New York Times and his niece, Mary L. Trump.
Speaking to reporters Monday morning, Habba stated that she is ready to tackle the state’s corruption. (RELATED: Anti-Trump Law Enforcement Leader Caught Trying To Flee Overseas)

After earning a bachelor’s degree in political science from Lehigh University in 2005, Habba initially worked in the fashion industry with Marc Jacobs. She later pursued a Juris Doctor at Widener University Commonwealth Law School, graduating in 2010. Following her clerkship with Judge Eugene J. Codey Jr. in New Jersey’s Superior Court, she joined Tompkins, McGuire, Wachenfeld & Barry, LLP as an associate. In 2013, she became a partner at Sandelands Eyet LLP, a firm co-founded by her then-husband. In 2020, Habba established her own practice, Habba, Madaio & Associates LLP, based in Bedminster, New Jersey. (RELATED: Anti-Trump Prosecutor Ordered To Cough Up Potentially Damning Documents)
Habba’s relationship with Trump began in 2019 when she joined the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster. The membership facilitated her initial fortuitous meeting with Trump. By September 2021, she was part of his legal team, representing him in high-profile cases. Her role expanded as she became a legal spokesperson and senior advisor for MAGA, Inc., Trump’s super PAC.
In December 2024, Trump appointed her as counselor to the president
Habba’s appointment has drawn scrutiny due to her close ties to Trump and her limited experience. Critics point out that she previously ran a small law firm specializing in civil litigation and has not held a prosecutorial role before.
She will supervise 150 attorneys in her new position.
