The political stage is buzzing coast to coast this week, from fiery campaign promises in New Jersey to post-election reflections in California and a potential breakthrough in Washington.
Ciattarelli’s Day-One Pledge in New Jersey
With less than a week until Election Day, Republican gubernatorial candidate Jack Ciattarelli is making his closing pitch to New Jersey voters — and it’s a hardline promise. Speaking at a Fox News town hall with Sean Hannity in Point Pleasant, Ciattarelli vowed that his first executive order as governor would end New Jersey’s status as a sanctuary state.
“Executive order number one, on day one, no town in this state will be a sanctuary city, we will not be a sanctuary state,” Ciattarelli declared to roaring applause. He argued that current policies encourage illegal immigration and limit local law enforcement.
Trailing Democrat Rep. Mikie Sherrill by seven points according to Fox News polling, Ciattarelli insists his campaign still holds the momentum to pull off an upset in deep-blue New Jersey.
Newsom Defends Biden — and Hints at His Own Future
On the opposite coast, California Governor Gavin Newsom is once again at the center of national attention. During a wide-ranging interview on NBC’s Meet the Press, Newsom faced tough questions from host Kristen Welker about President Biden’s fitness for office and Vice President Kamala Harris’s failed presidential bid.
Pressed on whether he truly believed Biden could serve through 2029, Newsom stood by his past defense of the president:
“There was no interaction I had that suggested otherwise,” he said, calling Biden’s final months in office “a master class of foreign policy and domestic policy.”
As for the Democrats’ loss, Newsom attributed it to “historical headwinds,” joking that he’s only on “page six of the 24 pages” explaining what went wrong — from “woke” politics to “The View.”
The California governor also left the door open to his own presidential ambitions, saying he would give a 2028 run “serious thought” after the 2026 midterms.
Warner Urges Trump to End the Shutdown Stalemate
Meanwhile in Washington, Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) is urging President Donald Trump to take a seat at the negotiating table and end the monthlong government shutdown. Speaking on CBS’s Face the Nation, Warner said the key to breaking the deadlock lies squarely with Trump now that he’s returned from his Asia trip.
“We knew this wasn’t going to end unless Donald Trump was back in the country,” Warner said. “He’s got to go ahead and put America first and sit down with us.”
The Virginia senator argued that any deal will require the president’s direct participation: “My Republican colleagues can’t move on anything without a Trump sign-off.”
