A bombshell review by the Department of Homeland Security’s Privacy Office (PRIV) has revealed that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) may have routinely bypassed providing hurricane relief aid to supporters of President Donald Trump—a practice that could amount to a violation of federal law.
According to Racket News, the internal review is set to be released in the coming weeks and suggests that politically biased aid distribution was not limited to hurricanes at the end of 2024, as FEMA officials had previously claimed, but instead was a systemic issue dating back to at least 2021.
Review Uncovers Years of Politically Biased Aid Decisions
The scandal first gained attention in November 2024, when The Daily Wire reported that a now-terminated FEMA supervisor, M’arni Washington, had directed agency workers to “avoid homes advertising Trump” during post-Hurricane Milton recovery operations in Florida.
While then-FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell testified under oath that the situation was isolated, the DHS Privacy Office’s forthcoming review tells a very different story.
“FEMA impermissibly collected prohibited information at least dating back to the Hurricane Ida disaster in September 2021,” the report reportedly states, referring to political affiliation.
According to the review, FEMA employees recorded and acted upon political signage, including “Trump 2024,” “MAGA,” and “F*** Joe Biden” flags, when deciding whether to approach homes for assistance assessments.
In one, dated September 2021: “A lot of political flags, posters, etc. ‘F** Joe Biden,’ ‘MAGA 2024,’ ‘Joe Biden Sucks,’ ‘Trump 2024.’ We do not recommend anyone visiting this location.”*
Political Profiling May Violate Federal Law
The review suggests these incidents may violate the Privacy Act of 1974, which bars federal agencies from collecting data about citizens’ political beliefs or speech protected by the First Amendment.
Legal experts raised alarm about FEMA’s use of political profiling in determining which homes to serve.
The Disaster Survivor Assistance Field Operations Guide used by FEMA reportedly advised workers to avoid situations that felt “hostile,” but did not define what constituted ‘hostile,’ effectively allowing field agents to interpret political signage as a threat.
Broader Pattern of Bias Alleged
The PRIV review alleges the problem spanned multiple hurricanes and was not exclusive to the 2024 Hurricane Milton relief efforts. Officials reportedly found patterns of politically biased aid decisions in disasters stretching back to Hurricane Ida in 2021.
One DHS official familiar with the report told Racket News that the practice of avoiding homes with pro-Trump messages “really escalated in the last administration,” referring to the Biden administration, which oversaw FEMA during this time period.
This raises serious questions about federal agencies potentially becoming politicized in ways that directly impact vulnerable citizens recovering from natural disasters.
FEMA and DHS Mum on Allegations
With the PRIV review still unpublished, further details remain to be confirmed. Calls for congressional investigation are growing.
The revelations, if verified, could prompt oversight hearings, lawsuits, and possible criminal investigations into whether FEMA officials knowingly allowed unlawful political targeting.
It also deepens the already growing mistrust between conservative Americans and federal institutions, reinforcing fears that government aid and services are increasingly being influenced by politics.
As of now, the PRIV review has reportedly recommended policy overhauls at FEMA to prevent further political discrimination, including prohibitions on subjective assessments based on household signs, speech, or affiliations.
Until then, questions loom over how many Americans — especially in disaster-stricken regions — may have been denied help simply for displaying support for the sitting president.
