FBI Director Kash Patel has acknowledged an ongoing fraud scandal in Minnesota involving childcare centers, stating that the issue has been under investigation for some time and remains a top priority for federal law enforcement.

The renewed attention follows a viral video posted by YouTube journalist Nick Shirley, who confronted an employee at an alleged learning center in Minnesota that was reportedly receiving millions of dollars in government aid despite appearing to show no signs of active operations. The video circulated widely online over the weekend, prompting increased public scrutiny.

In a post on X, Patel confirmed that the FBI was already actively investigating fraud schemes in the state prior to the surge in online discussion.

“The FBI is aware of recent social media reports in Minnesota. However, even before the public conversation escalated online, the FBI had surged personnel and investigative resources to Minnesota to dismantle large-scale fraud schemes exploiting federal programs. Fraud that steals from taxpayers and robs vulnerable children will remain a top FBI priority in Minnesota and nationwide,” Patel said.

Patel pointed to a previous major case as evidence of the scope of the problem, noting that the FBI dismantled a $250 million fraud scheme involving federal food aid intended for children during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The investigation exposed sham vendors, shell companies, and large-scale money laundering tied to the Feeding Our Future network,” Patel said. “The case led to 78 indictments and 57 convictions. Defendants included Abdiwahab Ahmed Mohamud, Ahmed Ali, Hussein Farah, Abdullahe Nur Jesow, Asha Farhan Hassan, Ousman Camara, and Abdirashid Bixi Dool, each charged for roles ranging from wire fraud to money laundering and conspiracy.”

Patel concluded by warning that such cases represent only a fraction of the broader problem, describing them as “just the tip of a very large iceberg.”

Concerns about systemic fraud in Minnesota’s welfare programs were also raised earlier this month by Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Thompson. Thompson revealed that approximately half of $18 billion in federal welfare funds distributed to support 14 Minnesota-administered programs since 2018 has been lost to fraud.

“Minnesota has become a magnet for fraud, so much so that we have developed a fraud tourism industry — people coming to our state purely to exploit and defraud its programs,” Thompson said. “This is a deeply unsettling reality that all Minnesotans should understand.”

Federal authorities have not announced new charges related specifically to the childcare centers highlighted in the viral video, but the FBI has indicated that investigations into large-scale fraud in Minnesota are ongoing.
