A federal judge has upheld Georgia's Republican-drawn state legislative and congressional maps.
The late redistricting effort by the Georgia General Assembly came after District Judge Steve Jones, an Obama appointee, ruled that the Republican-controlled state legislature improperly diluted the power of Black voters.
Jones ordered the creation of an additional majority-Black congressional district in metro Atlanta and seven other majority-Black districts in the state legislature.
The revised congressional map approved by Jones has an additional majority-Black congressional district while retaining the 9-5 seat GOP advantage in the state's 14 congressional districts.
Despite inroads by Democrats, the state legislative maps preserve the GOP majorities in both chambers.
