Cassidy Hutchinson, the former chief assistant to ex-White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, has concluded testifying before the House select committee investigating the U.S. Capitol attack.
Hutchinson’s testimony before a hushed audience in the Longworth House Office Building made her the first Trump White House employee to publicly meet with the committee.
She started by claiming that, despite fears from within the White House that Jan. 6 could turn violent, former President Donald Trump only expressed alarm and indignation that day after it became clear his Stop the Steal rally had not reached capacity.
Answering questions from committee Vice Chair Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), Hutchinson said that Trump and Meadows received warnings from the Secret Service before the rally that a number of the president’s supporters had brought a variety of weapons, from AR-15s to sharpened flagpoles, with them.
Despite this, Hutchinson claimed that Trump urged his security detail to remove the metal detectors that the crowd at the Ellipse on the National Mall had to go through so that the crowd size might meet his expectations.
Hutchinson testified, “I was in the vicinity of a conversation where I overheard the president say something to the effect of, ‘I don’t f***ing care that they have weapons. They’re not here to hurt me. Take the f***ing mags away.'”
Later, Hutchinson said Trump lunged at the head of his security detail and tried gaining control of the presidential limo after being told it wasn’t safe to go to the Capitol.
Robert Engel, the special agent in charge on Jan. 6, 2021, had already testified before the committee.
Hutchinson proceeded to describe a discussion she claimed to have overheard between White House counsel Pat Cipollone, Meadows and Trump over the “hang Mike Pence” chats echoing that afternoon through the Capitol Building.
Per Hutchinson, Meadows allegedly said Trump replied that Pence “deserved it” when advisers told the president that rioters had called for executing Pence.
Cheney declared that Trump’s response explained his alleged resistance to sending help as rioters defaced the Capitol Building.
Hutchinson testified that the White House had broken into three factions by the afternoon of Jan. 6, starting with the White House counsel’s office and Ivanka Trump. That moderate bloc wanted the former president to tell the rioters to go home peacefully and condemn the violence.
Another group took a more neutral stance.
The last group, which supposedly included Meadows, allegedly sought to deflect blame from Trump and erroneously blame Antifa for violence perpetrated by rioters.
Hutchinson told the panel members that Trump could never bring himself to condemn the attack.
She also claimed that Meadows sought a presidential pardon after the events of that day.
While Hutchinson’s testimony moved critics of the former administration and members of the legacy media, others were more skeptical.
One prominent conservative, speaking on the condition of anonymity, compared Hutchinson to Fawn Hall. Hall served as Lt. Col. Oliver North’s secretary during the Iran Contra affair.
Hall received immunity from prosecution in exchange for two days of testimony in front of Congress (where she admitted to shredding thousands of incriminating documents).
At least one prominent member of the Trump White House publicly disagrees.
Following Hutchinson’s testimony, Rep. Cheney said the following in a closing statement:
I want all Americans to know that what Ms. Hutchinson has done today is not easy. The easy course is to hide from the spotlight, to refuse to come forward, to attempt to downplay or deny what happened.
Following Cheney’s remarks, Chair Bennie Hill (D-Miss.) reiterated his thanks for Hutchinson’s service. He further stated that the committee’s doors remained open to all potential witnesses, including anyone who had previously testified.

Yes, Stephen, this witness was well schooled (and probably well paid) to give this “evidence” to the rigged committee. Will we ever hear the truth from a biased, dishonest committee of democrats? I agree that DJT has thin skin and cannot help his mouth from opening when closing would be the smart thing to do. But this Jan 6th commission has shown how desperately the dems want to be rid of Trump. There are those of us who wish he would not run in 2024 because he cannot drop his obsession with 2020; but he would be great behind the scenes at leading the party, given a candidate who does not harbor rancor.

In her testimony, she said President Trump was doing everything he could to get to the demonstrations. He either thought it was peaceful or needed to get there to make it peaceful. He would not have gone there if he thought anyone’s life was in danger – including his own or the unarmed woman who was shot and killed.
