Governor Calls For Special Session To Redraw Indiana’s Congressional Map Ahead Of Midterms

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana Republican Governor Mike Braun has officially called a special session of the state legislature for Nov. 3, 2025, to redraw the state’s U.S. House congressional district boundaries.

The move aligns with a broader national Republican effort, encouraged by President Trump and the White House, to pursue mid-decade redistricting in key states ahead of the 2026 midterm elections to expand GOP control in Congress. Gov. Braun said the session aims to “protect Hoosiers from efforts in other states that seek to diminish their voice in Washington and ensure their representation in Congress is fair.”

Indiana currently has nine U.S. House seats, with Republicans holding seven and Democrats holding two. The redistricting process is aimed at making the two Democratic-held districts more competitive, targeting the swing 1st District (which includes Gary and the surrounding Chicago suburbs and exurbs) and the heavily Democratic 7th District (Indianapolis) to make them highly vulnerable.

Despite the governor’s push, Senate GOP leaders have previously said they lack the votes to approve a new map, raising doubts about whether the session will succeed. Some insiders believe pressure from the governor could shift the balance. (RELATED: Indiana Republicans Can’t Rally Enough Votes For Trump’s Desired Congressional Map)

Critics, including members of the Black Legislative Caucus and civil rights groups, argue the plan represents a partisan power grab and could dilute minority voting strength.

Braun noted that mid-November marks the practical deadline to call a session if lawmakers intend to finalize new maps before candidate filing deadlines for 2026.

A successful effort in Indiana could energize similar Republican redistricting pushes in other states, while failure may discourage efforts in places like Kansas and Florida.
