Maurene Comey, a longtime federal prosecutor and daughter of former FBI Director James Comey, is suing the Department of Justice over her abrupt firing in July.
The lawsuit, filed on Monday in U.S. District Court in Manhattan, names Attorney General Pam Bondi, the DOJ’s Executive Office for U.S. Attorneys, and other federal officials as defendants. It alleges that Comey’s termination was politically motivated, unconstitutional, and done without proper notice or cause.

- Call for reinstatement: She is seeking both reinstatement to her previous position and a formal declaration that her firing was unlawful.
Comey joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York in 2014 and became an assistant U.S. Attorney two years later. She went on to handle major cases involving Jeffrey Epstein, Ghislaine Maxwell, and Sean “Diddy” Combs.
She was dismissed on July 16 via a memo that cited Article II of the Constitution, which gives the president removal authority over executive branch officials. The memo offered no specific explanation.
In a farewell message to colleagues, Comey warned about the weaponization of fear in the justice system. “Fear is the tool of a tyrant, wielded to suppress independent thought” she wrote.
Her father, James Comey, issued a rare public statement after the firing, saying the DOJ’s credibility is “in grave danger.”
The Justice Department has declined to comment on the lawsuit or the reasons behind her removal.
