During his confirmation hearing on Jan. 15, 2025, Duffy outlined his vision for addressing the nation’s transportation challenges. He emphasized plans to modernize infrastructure and highlighted his intention to visit flood-damaged areas in Tennessee and North Carolina as a priority for the department. His remarks underscored a commitment to addressing pressing transportation needs in both rural and urban communities.
Duffy’s nomination sailed through the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation with unanimous approval in a 28-0 vote, signaling broad bipartisan support. Several senators praised Duffy’s experience and collaborative approach during the committee’s deliberations. As The Hill reports, their backing paved the way for Tuesday’s resounding Senate confirmation:
“At the end of the day, I am confident that Sean is the right person for this job in this coming, upcoming administration,” Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) recently said to introduce Duffy before the panel for his confirmation hearing.
“I believe he will help deliver for Wisconsin families, businesses, and workers, and I expect that he will work through this committee and both sides of the aisle to improve our infrastructure and address the challenges that arise in the years ahead,” she said, adding that she was “proud” to introduce him to the committee.
Duffy served nearly five terms in the House representing northern Wisconsin, resigning in 2019 to help care for a newborn daughter with health challenges.
He has since lobbied in Washington and was a frequent presence on Fox News, where his wife has been a host in recent years.
As secretary, Duffy is expected to focus on rail safety and plans to utilize funds from President Biden’s 2021 bipartisan infrastructure law. He will oversee over 55,000 individuals and manage a $110 billion budget.
He previously served as a prosecutor and has been recognized for his bipartisan efforts, notably securing federal funding for the St. Croix Crossing bridge project.
