Senator Breaks With Trump Administration Over Media Crackdown
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) is pushing back against the Trump administration’s handling of the Jimmy Kimmel controversy, warning that federal regulators should not act as “speech police” in response to offensive or controversial jokes.
The unusual move puts Cruz at odds with efforts tied to the administration’s Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and its Trump-appointed chairman, Brendan Carr.
FCC Action Sparks Free Speech Concerns
The controversy escalated after the FCC ordered an early review of ABC’s broadcast licenses, following pressure from President Donald Trump and allies over a joke Kimmel made about Melania Trump two days before the White House Correspondents’ dinner shooting.
Critics — including Cruz — argued the timing raised concerns that the government was punishing a network over editorial content, rather than enforcing neutral regulations.
As The Guardian reports:
The decision drew backlash from the industry group National Association of Broadcasters, whose chief executive called it “nearly unprecedented”; from the Republican senator Ted Cruz, who said the agency should not operate as “the speech police”; and from press freedom organizations that have derided it as an example of a disfavored network being punished for editorial purposes.
Carr – the US’s top media watchdog – instead said the license renewal order stemmed from an investigation that the FCC opened into Disney and ABC’s diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives back in March 2025. Still, it came just a day after the first lady and the president called for ABC to fire Kimmel, who was suspended by the network last fall under pressure from Carr, for joking that Melania Trump had the “glow like an expectant widow”.
Cruz pushed back, warning that using federal power in this way could set a dangerous precedent, particularly if future administrations were to target conservative media voices.
“Dangerous Precedent” for Government Power
Cruz emphasized that while Kimmel’s remarks may be offensive, government intervention is not the solution.
He argued that once regulators begin policing speech, the same authority could be used against political opponents down the line — a concern echoed by free speech advocates and media groups.
The stance aligns with Cruz’s earlier comments describing FCC involvement in content disputes as “dangerous” and potentially counterproductive.
Controversial Joke Fuels Political Firestorm
The dispute stems from a Kimmel monologue that included a joke about Melania Trump having the glow of an “expectant widow,” which sparked backlash from the White House and calls for the comedian to be fired.
President Donald Trump and Melania Trump both condemned the remark as “hateful and violent rhetoric” and called on ABC to fire Jimmy Kimmel following the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
In his April 27 monologue, Kimmel defended the joke as a “light roast” about the couple’s 23-year age gap rather than a call to violence.
Reports indicated that ABC stands by Kimmel and had no plans to suspend or fire him
Rare Political Alignment on Free Speech
Cruz’s stance has placed him in an alignment with media figures and free speech advocates, defending a comedian he frequently criticizes politically.
Bigger Picture: Media, Power, and the First Amendment
The clash underscores growing tensions over:
- The role of federal agencies like the FCC
- Political influence over media regulation
- The limits of satire in an increasingly polarized environment
Legal experts warn that using regulatory tools in response to speech could raise serious First Amendment concerns.
Bottom Line
Ted Cruz’s defense of Jimmy Kimmel signals a clear warning: government should not regulate speech — even when it’s controversial or offensive.
As the FCC’s actions come under scrutiny, the debate is quickly becoming a test of how far federal power can go in regulating media content.

Kimmel is a mindless A-Hole, he and his audience relish in all of the stupid crap he keeps regurgitating.
Jimmy Kimmel is reprehensible person, He should be removed from any broadcasting site. I understand our Presidents’ reaction and stand with him. I am disappointed in your reaction as it is too extreme. How would you feel if you were used as example for your wife?
Yeah, I’ve got to agree with Cruz on this one ( and many other of his statements ).
I consider Kimmel to be pretty much a low-life, but he has a right to be stupid.
We, the American public, can call him what we wish ( within reason ), and he can speak like a jerk.
That’s his and our right!
This is what is called ‘freedom’!
But we can ( and should ) just turn his show off.
He’s not worth the time that it takes to listen to him.
But it’s still a fact that he didn’t tell a lie THIS TIME!
He just made a disgusting comment.
He just talked like the goof that he is!
Cruse is plain WRONG Kimmel is nothing but a consistent nasty America hating liar that needs to have his 🫏 sued off him!!
