The mysterious drone sightings over the Mid-Atlantic widely reported in December ignited a wave of speculation among the public and media. Despite the growing curiosity, the federal government offered little in the way of answers.
However, President-elect Donald Trump is committed to shedding light on the issue.
During a press event on Thursday, Trump promised to investigate the ongoing mystery and stated that he would release a detailed report on the matter shortly after his inauguration. Yet, as rumors swirl—ranging from theories of alien involvement to suggestions of a covert Chinese operation—officials remain largely silent.
Federal authorities have attempted to reassure the public that the drones did not pose a security threat, urging calm while withholding specific details. Meanwhile, an earlier incident added fuel to the fire: radioactive material had gone missing in New Jersey, a fact disclosed by Belleville Mayor Michael Melham during a live television interview.
Appearing on Good Day New York, Mayor Melham tied the Dec. 2 incident involving the missing radioactive shipment to the recent drone sightings. The shipment, processed through the massive Port Newark–Elizabeth Marine Terminal, had reportedly been damaged in transit and arrived at its destination—a New Jersey cancer treatment center—without the critical Ge-68 pin source used for medical imaging.
“We’re aware of a threat that came in through Port Newark. Maybe that’s radioactive material,” Melham said during the interview. He speculated that the drones seen flying in grid-like patterns could be involved in the search for the lost material. “What might they be looking for? Maybe that’s radioactive material.”

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) confirmed the loss of radioactive material, issuing an alert that underscored the gravity of the situation. The missing shipment further heightened anxieties surrounding the drone sightings.
Trump addressed the issue briefly at a Republican governors’ gathering at Mar-a-Lago, following his attendance at the burial of former President Jimmy Carter. In response to questions from Fox News reporter Peter Doocy, Trump reiterated his promise to provide clarity.
When asked about the drones, Trump said, “I’m going to give you a report on drones about one day into the administration because I think it’s ridiculous that they’re not telling you about what’s going on with the drones.”
Governors from Virginia, Louisiana and Wyoming voiced their shared frustrations, highlighting the need for unified action and solutions.

The combined mysteries—the missing radioactive material and the unexplained drones—remain unresolved, leaving the nation awaiting answers that may or may not come in the weeks ahead. For now, the public is left to wonder: are these two incidents connected, and if so, what are the implications?
