Activists Urge ‘National Shutdown’ Friday To Oppose ICE Enforcement

Activists and protest groups across the United States are calling for a “National Shutdown” general strike on Friday, Jan. 30, 2026, to protest federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations and recent fatal shootings involving federal agents. Demonstrations and actions are planned in cities nationwide, with organizers urging participants to abstain from work, school, and shopping as an economic protest.

The movement stems from ongoing unrest in Minnesota, where labor unions, students, and a coalition of progressive organizations held a statewide general strike on Jan. 23 to oppose expanded federal immigration enforcement.

Nationwide calls for action follow public outrage over the fatal shootings of Minneapolis residents Renée Good on Jan. 7 and Alex Pretti on Jan. 24 by federal immigration agents, which have drawn sustained local and national criticism.

As Axios reports:

The intrigue: Friday’s action falls on the same day Congress faces a partial government shutdown as Senate Democrats — and some Republicans — have said they’ll reject any spending bill that includes Department of Homeland Security funding.

ICE is supported by last year’s massive funding bills, but Democrats are still pushing for reforms at DHS, including requiring warrants for arrests and banning agents from wearing masks.

State of play: Student groups, including the local Students for Justice in Palestine, as well as activists for immigrants’ rights and local labor unions, have endorsed Friday’s call to action.

Organizers emphasize broad participation, including rallies and demonstrations, but there is no confirmed evidence that Friday’s events will trigger a coordinated nationwide shutdown of most U.S. businesses or institutions.
