Could this be the end of Project Veritas?
The conservative organization founded by James O'Keefe faced severe financial difficulties following his turbulent departure. It suspended all operations indefinitely in September amid widespread layoffs.
Now, the latest CEO, Hannah Giles, is bidding farewell in dramatic fashion.
Earlier this fall, the nonprofit laid off all remaining undercover journalists. A former Project Veritas staffer revealed that only 11 employees, including Giles, remained.
The staff received a perfunctory letter from the human resources department: “In the interest of preserving the possible future existence of Project Veritas, we need to put operations on pause and, as communicated since the Spring, another Reduction in Force (‘RIF') is necessary.”
We cannot “carry the present staff count any longer,” it added. Employees were reminded of their nondisclosure agreements.
Although Giles was initially optimistic about turning Project Veritas around, she announced on Monday that she was leaving the group immediately after discovering evidence of past illegal activity and financial improprieties, which she has shared with law enforcement.
Giles gained widespread attention more than 10 years ago for her involvement in a sting operation that resulted in the downfall of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN). In the autumn of 2009, she and O'Keefe starred in a series of undercover videos, convincing ACORN staff that they wanted to run a brothel employing underage immigrants from Central America.
