President Donald Trump is set to sign an executive order designed to eliminate federal taxpayer benefits for individuals residing in the U.S. illegally. The executive action aims to address concerns regarding the financial strain placed on American taxpayers due to illegal immigration and sanctuary policies.
The order will instruct all federal agencies to identify which federally funded programs are providing financial assistance to illegal immigrants and take “corrective action.” A key element of the initiative is ensuring that no federal funds allocated to state and local governments are used to support sanctuary policies or assist illegal immigration.
One of the central features of the executive order will be a mandate for improvements in eligibility verification processes. These measures are designed to reinforce the Trump administration’s commitment to ensuring public resources are reserved for U.S. citizens and legal residents.
According to the White House, the order underscores Trump’s prioritization of protecting federal public health benefits especially with regards to vulnerable American populations such as veterans and the disabled. The directive comes amid mounting concerns over the growing costs associated with illegal immigration, which have strained both state, local and national budgets.
A White House fact sheet highlighted the financial burden on taxpayers, citing estimates from the House Homeland Security Committee. According to the committee, taxpayers could be responsible for as much as $451 billion in costs related to the care of illegal immigrants since January 2021.
The Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) has estimated that American taxpayers are spending at least $182 billion annually on costs related to the presence of 20 million illegal immigrants and their children. This figure includes $66.5 billion in federal expenses and an additional $115.6 billion in state and local funds.
This move is part of a broader crackdown on illegal immigration, which also includes law enforcement raids and other measures designed to reduce the flow of illegal migrants into the U.S.
The executive order also targets sanctuary policies, which provide protection to individuals residing in the U.S. illegally.
