CNN has a new senior political commentator.
The cable news network announced it had hired just retired Illinois Rep. Adam Kinzinger Wednesday.
Kinzinger, a Republican, emerged as one of former President Trump’s fiercest critics before serving as one of two Republicans on the Jan. 6 committee.
In an interview with Don Lemon, Kinzinger debuted in his new role, where he outlined the latest concessions Kevin McCarthy has made to win over his detractors.

He famously gave a tearful speech during one of the committee’s early hearings as he reflected on the events of Jan. 6, saying there’s a “difference” between “a crime — even grave crimes — and a coup.”
Kinzinger’s hiring at CNN comes on the heels of a time of tremendous change at the network, which, under new President Chris Licht, has made several programming and personnel moves that have garnered headlines and some criticism from liberals.
Licht has said he would like CNN’s programs and political coverage to take a more sober tone and represent a wider array of viewpoints.
For his part, Kinzinger’s criticisms of McCarthy remain as strong as ever:
Just days ago, he blamed Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) for what he called the “crazy elements” in Congress. McCarthy is currently locked in a battle for the Speakership of the House.
Kinzinger served six terms in the House before Illinois Democrats erased his district in an aggressive gerrymander. Before that, he served active duty in the Air Force. Kinzinger currently serves in the Air National Guard as a lieutenant colonel.
While he’s expressed no interest in running for president, Kinzinger is on the record saying it “would be fun” to compete against Trump.
