Bill Maher, the outspoken host of HBO’s Real Time, didn’t held nothing back in his Friday night monologue, following Vice President Kamala Harris’s election loss to President-elect Donald Trump. Maher called Democrats “brats” and “snobs,” and accusing them of alienating voters with their elitist and out of touch attitudes.
He suggested that the political climate on the left had become so intolerant of differing opinions that it was driving voters away. In his characteristic biting style, Maher voiced his concerns over the lack of ideological diversity within progressive circles.
The SNL Example: A Microcosm of the Left’s Elitism
Referring to SNL’s history of openly liberal stances, Maher asked a rhetorical question: “What if one of the Saturday Night Live cast members was for Trump?” He argued that such a cast member would be made to feel unwelcome and would likely have to keep their political beliefs to themselves. Maher claimed this “echo chamber” mentality was one of the core issues with the left, adding that the absence of ideological diversity on the left was a major problem.
“I’m sure every single member of the Saturday Night Live cast was a Harris supporter,” Maher said. “But what if one of them wasn’t? What if one of those cast members was for Trump? Would they have felt comfortable saying so? I really don’t think so.”
This lack of tolerance for diverse opinions within left-leaning circles, Maher suggested, has led to a political environment where people are afraid to express their true beliefs for fear of facing backlash from their peers. He called this phenomenon a “bad place” for the country to be, especially when the left’s ideological rigidity could cause them to miss out on crucial, cross-party conversations.
Elon Musk and the “Snobbery” of the Left
Maher also referenced the controversy surrounding SNL when billionaire Elon Musk hosted the show in 2021. At the time, several cast members openly voiced their discomfort with Musk’s appearance, even though he was not yet publicly aligned with Trump or any particular political ideology. Instead, Musk was widely known for his business acumen as the world’s richest man, and Maher felt the reaction from the SNL cast demonstrated a growing intolerance for anyone outside of the left’s political consensus.
“I remember when Elon Musk hosted. And this is well before he was a Trumper. He was just the richest man in the world,” Maher recalled. “A number of the cast members on Saturday Night Live, like, they didn’t want to deal with him. They didn’t exactly boycott, but they made it plain. And I was thinking, really, you have Elon Musk on your show for a week. You could talk to one of the most interesting, brilliant people the world has ever produced, even about this issue that bothers you so much—that he’s so rich and lots of people aren’t. But no, you don’t want to even deal with him.”
In Maher’s view, the left’s tendency to reject or avoid engaging with successful or powerful figures they deem politically undesirable – even when those figures might offer valuable insights or entertainment value – is a key problem.
The “Brats” of the Left: A Call for Change
Maher’s most pointed criticism, however, came when he referred to the left as a group of “brats” and “snobs,” arguing that their sense of superiority and their dismissal of people with differing views was turning voters off.
“That’s what I hate about the left. You’re brats,” Maher said bluntly. “You’re brats, and you’re snobs, and people don’t like that.”
Maher’s frustration with what he perceives as a growing sense of entitlement and elitism among left-wing Democrats is not new. He has frequently criticized the Democratic Party for alienating working-class voters and for prioritizing identity politics and political correctness over more substantive issues. In his view, the left’s obsession with moral superiority is driving away potential allies, creating a divisive political environment where “winning” feels more important than actually governing in a way that appeals to a broad spectrum of the electorate.
The Bigger Picture: A Warning for Democrats
Maher’s rant about the state of the left, while fueled by frustration over recent political outcomes, is a warning to Democrats about the dangers of alienating voters by embracing a monoculture of thought. The comedian’s criticisms of Harris’s loss to Trump, combined with his lamentations about the lack of political diversity in progressive spaces, suggest that the left must be more open to a broader range of perspectives if they hope to win future elections.
As Maher pointed out, if the Democratic Party continues to foster a culture of intellectual and political homogeneity, they risk further isolating swing voters and moderates, ultimately leading to more electoral defeats.
In the end, Maher’s comments reflect his long-standing frustration with the direction of American politics, particularly within the progressive movement. Whether or not one agrees with his characterization of the left, Maher’s call for greater tolerance, open dialogue, and political diversity could be seen as a much-needed reminder for Democrats as they seek to regain the trust of a broader swath of voters.

What’s truly is ironic is that the progressive wing of the Democratic party are the ones always spouting off about diversity and equity and that everyone should have a seat at the table. While in truth they are one of the worst groups to deny people that disagree with them a seat at the table. A case of what my old grandmother’s’ born in the late 1800’s’ use to call, “the pot calling the kettle black”!
Bill, I am getting to like you again, GREAT article, you like many others are coming to your senses, I consider myself an Independent and vote for what the person can do for me to

That’s great, Bill, but democrat policies also turn people off. The party has become more socialist and authoritarian, and frankly, unamerican.
Statistics suggest that there were most likely more than 1 cast member that is pro Trump.
Seijah Drake you are one of my favorites on this site.
Grammar police here: “Bill Maher, the outspoken host of HBO’s Real Time, didn’t held nothing back” should read “Bill Maher, the outspoken host of HBO’s Real Time, held nothing back” or “Bill Maher, the outspoken host of HBO’s Real Time, didn’t hold anything back”. I don’t know whether it’s a problem of the schools today, or simply a typo. I’d prefer to believe the latter.
Maher as always the democrats lost their way a long time ago, and you are leading the losers.
Yeah, you are a liar, just like him, Kamala and Joe.
