Left-wing commentator and author John Fugelsang stirred controversy during an appearance on CNN NewsNight by claiming that Democratic New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani’s socialist policies are in line with the teachings of Jesus Christ.
Fugelsang made the comments while defending Mamdani’s platform, which includes proposals such as rent freezes, a $30 minimum wage, government-run grocery stores, and a fare-free public bus system. He also addressed criticism of Mamdani’s previous statements about “seizing the means of production,” a hallmark phrase associated with socialist ideology.
“Mamdani is, in his policies, so much closer to the actual teachings of Jesus than many [politicians],” Fugelsang asserted.
Pushback from Conservatives
Fugelsang’s remarks drew immediate rebuttal from Republican strategist Brad Todd, who highlighted Mamdani’s explicit support for state control of industry.
“Did he say he wants to seize the means of production? He did,” Todd stated, referencing a resurfaced video from a 2021 Young Democratic Socialists of America conference in which Mamdani called for exactly that.
Fugelsang attempted to downplay the remark.
“Seize the means of production of what? Manhattan? Of what, falafels?” he quipped. “They’re Democratic Socialists, it’s not the same thing.”
Fugelsang added that Mamdani, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), shares the political lineage of figures like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and that he resonates with a new generation of young, progressive voters.
What Mamdani Said About Socialism
In the 2021 video, Mamdani explicitly connected his political mission to seizing the means of production—a foundational principle of socialism.
He has embraced the label of Democratic Socialist, and has received endorsements from high-profile left-wing politicians like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT).
Jesus and Socialism? A Longstanding Debate
Fugelsang’s attempt to frame Mamdani’s platform as Christ-like taps into a larger debate that has divided theologians, economists, and political theorists for decades.
On the left, some, like Marxist theorist Terry Eagleton, argue that Jesus’ aversion to wealth and materialism aligns closely with socialist ideals. Reverend Obery Hendricks has called Jesus a “revolutionary socialist” who opposed oppressive power structures and advocated for radical redistribution.
However, many theologians disagree, highlighting the difference between individual generosity and charity versus offloading those virtues to the state.
In his book Was Jesus a Socialist?, Lawrence W. Reed argues that the New Testament never endorses state ownership or central economic planning.
“Nowhere in the New Testament does [Jesus] advocate for the government to punish the rich—or even to use tax money to help the poor,” Reed writes.
Reed also references Luke 12, in which Jesus rebukes a man for demanding wealth redistribution from his brother, asking, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?”
Mamdani, a Muslim state assemblyman representing Queens, could become New York City’s first openly socialist mayor in over a century. His proposals reflect a growing progressive movement among younger voters in urban areas.

Anybody that thinks like this, this really nuts! He apparently is not a Christain.
It is not only that Mamdani is a socialist/communist, having no qualifications to run even a small business, but he is an outright, totally open nazi! THIS is what you New Yorkers want??!
