Jen Psaki, a progressive MSNBC host and former press secretary for President Joe Biden, voiced deep concerns this weekend about the climate of fear and violence, supposedly towards journalists, following the near assassination of former President Donald Trump.
The Aftermath and Rising Tensions
During an appearance on NBC News’ “Meet the Press” with Kristen Welker, Psaki addressed the tension and the possibility of violence in the wake of the assassination attempt. She emphasized that attributing the attack to Democrats and the media only heightens fears and escalates the risk of further violence.
“For anyone out there who has a platform who thinks the moment right now is to be political and attack the other party, you are feeding into the danger,” Psaki stated. “You are making it more likely there’s retaliation. I’m incredibly scared. I’m scared for journalists. I’m scared for people who have public platforms of all parties. And that’s how people should feel.”
A Request for Calm from the President
Psaki also pointed out the critical role of leaders in calming the public. Referring to President Joe Biden’s Monday night interview with Lester Holt of NBC News, she urged a focus on healing rather than political division. “I mean, he has a huge interview tomorrow. And the moment there is not to talk about the political path forward. It is to be a healer and to lower the rhetoric and the – and – and the – the tenor in the conversation in the country,” she noted.
