Over the weekend, MSNBC host Symone Sanders-Townsend interrupted a discussion about illegal immigration.
Since then, Johan Jose Rangel Martinez and Franklin Jose Pena Ramos have been charged with capital murder in the tragic death of 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray. Border Patrol had caught and released both Martinez and Ramos shortly before Nungaray’s murder.
The Incident on “The Weekend”
During a segment on MSNBC’s “The Weekend,” Sanders-Townsend scolded one of her guests for using the term “illegal.” She argued, “We don’t use the term illegal… They’re undocumented individuals.”
The guest in question, Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts, sharply retorted, “That’s sweet, they’re illegal aliens,” refusing to comply with Sanders’ request.
Heated Exchange With Michael Steele
Anti-Trump former Republican National Committee (RNC) Chair Michael Steele chided Roberts as well, saying, “What you’re saying is because you have this instance of individuals behaving badly then that’s a reflection of every individual in that community.”
Sanders-Townsend backed Steele, adding, “In Texas, undocumented immigrants were 37.1% less likely to be convicted of a crime.”
Tensions Rising as Election Approaches
This exchange – and death of Jocelyn Nungaray – comes as the fiercely contested presidential election heats up, adding fuel to the ongoing debates surrounding the ongoing border crisis.
