Stephen A. Smith, the outspoken ESPN commentator known for his fiery opinions on sports and politics, has sparked a new wave of speculation regarding his future ambitions. At the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) convention in Las Vegas on Monday, Smith revealed that he is considering running for office in the coming years—if he believes it’s a path to victory.
Smith, who has long been a prominent figure in the sports media landscape, previously dismissed any ideas of pursuing a political career. In fact, he had denied rumors that he would run for president, attributing the chatter to what he saw as the desperation of some Democrats seeking a leader. However, Smith’s comments at the NAB event signal that he is now open to the possibility of entering politics under the right circumstances.
During his speech at the NAB convention, Smith explained that while he’s not actively seeking a political career, recent events and growing support from people in positions of power have led him to reconsider. “Over the last few weeks, I’ve had no choice but to get more serious about it,” Smith stated. “I’ve been approached by people on Capitol Hill. I’ve been approached by people who are elected officials in office, whether it’s governors or mayors or what have you. People have legitimately, seriously, asked me about it.”
While he insisted that he doesn’t want to be a politician, Smith declared that he would no longer rule out a potential run for office. “I have no desire to be a politician. My life is pretty well, but I’ve decided that I’m no longer going to close that door,” he said. “I’m gonna keep my options open. I’m going to entertain the possibility.”
Smith’s comments suggest that he is contemplating a future political run if the opportunity presents itself. “If it comes in late 2026, 2027, where I look at this country and think it’s an absolute mess and there’s legitimate reason to believe – whether it’s via exploratory committees or anything else – that I indeed have a legitimate shot to win the presidency of the United States, I am not going to rule it out,” Smith continued. “I’m not playing.”
Smith seemed convinced of his viability in large part due to the debate component of political campaigning. “Imagine me on a debate stage with these people, these politicians,” Smith said, noting that his expertise in media and live commentary would give him a distinct advantage. “This is what I do for a living. I am not a politician. I don’t have a political record for them to lean on. I can challenge what you literally say [as politicians].”
“They better hope I’m not interested, I’ll tell you that much,” he added. “I don’t like any of [the prospective 2028 candidates] right now.”
His strong opinions, confidence in public speaking, and platform as a national sports commentator could make him a formidable force if he chooses to take the leap.
For some, the push for Smith to run highlights a possible sense of desperation, particularly within the Democratic Party, as they search for a charismatic and relatable leader. With a lack of clear, prominent figures emerging as unifying candidates, the idea of someone like Smith could be seen as a sign of the party scrambling to find new leadership. While Smith’s remarks remain exploratory, his potential run nonetheless underscores the growing frustration and uncertainty of America’s left wing.
