Supreme Court Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor is set to make a rare daytime television appearance as a guest on The View this fall, Variety confirmed Monday. The justice will join the panel on September 9, one day after the talk show’s season premiere, making her one of the first high-profile guests of the new season.
Sotomayor’s appearance is notable both for her position on the Supreme Court and the show’s historically liberal-leaning tone. The longtime ABC program—hosted by Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, Alyssa Farah Griffin, and Ana Navarro—has been a frequent platform for progressive viewpoints and political advocacy.
A Justice Aligned with the Show’s Politics
Justice Sotomayor is one of three remaining liberal justices on the high court and has consistently dissented from the Court’s recent conservative majority decisions. Her dissent in the 2022 Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization case, which overturned Roe v. Wade, was widely cited by abortion rights advocates. She also harshly criticized the Court’s 2023 decision banning race-based affirmative action in college admissions, insisting that it would “entrench racial segregation.”
Given The View’s political leanings, Sotomayor is expected to receive a warm welcome from the co-hosts, who have often echoed similar sentiments on key legal and cultural issues.
A One-Sided Guest List?
While The View regularly discusses major political and legal stories, critics have long accused the program of excluding ideological diversity. According to a 2025 media study by watchdog group Newsbusters, the show has yet to host a single openly conservative guest or Trump supporter this calendar year.
Democratic guests have been treated with little scrutiny. In a June segment, Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) received effusive praise from the panel, particularly from Goldberg, who appeared starstruck during the interview. During a 2024 appearance by then-Vice President Kamala Harris, the vice president was asked what she would do differently from President Biden—responding, “Nothing comes to mind”—without follow-up or challenge.
Critics say the show’s approach has turned it from a roundtable for debate into a bubble for left-leaning commentary.
Controversy Over Calls for Sotomayor to Retire
Sotomayor’s upcoming appearance also comes after liberal commentators—including former MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan—publicly urged her to step down while Democrats still held the presidency, citing concerns over her health and the Court’s long-term balance. The call sparked backlash on The View, where Goldberg lashed out at Hasan, accusing him of undermining one of the few remaining liberal voices on the bench.
A Public-Facing Court?
The Supreme Court remains one of the most powerful yet insulated institutions in American life. While justices occasionally speak at law schools or conferences, it is highly unusual for a sitting justice to appear on a daytime entertainment talk show. Sotomayor’s decision to do so may raise eyebrows among her peers, though none have publicly weighed in on the decision.
Whether her appearance will be a thoughtful discussion of constitutional issues or a partisan echo chamber remains to be seen—but it’s unlikely to feature any dissent.

We’ve all known that she was one of barry’s DEI appointments. She should have been disqualified when she made the “wise Latina” comment during confirmation.
TOTALLY agree.
How fitting that the leftist loon that Bathhouse Barry put on the Supreme Court would rant along with the leading loons of daytime television.
That any justice would even acknowledge the view let alone appear on that show shows why our country is screwed.
