David Shipley, the opinion editor at The Washington Post, resigned following an announcement from the paper’s owner, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, that a new editorial direction would prioritize support for personal liberties and free markets on the opinion pages.

While acknowledging that the publication would still cover a variety of topics, Bezos emphasized that viewpoints in opposition to these pillars would not be featured on the Post’s editorial pages.

Bezos further elaborated on the motivation behind this editorial pivot, stressing his belief in the importance of freedom, both in the economic sphere and beyond. He described freedom as ethical and practical because it drives creativity, invention, and prosperity.

“I am of America and for America, and proud to be so,” Bezos said in the statement, underlining his commitment to the principles of individual freedom and a free market economy. “Our country did not get here by being typical,” he continued. “And a big part of America’s success has been freedom in the economic realm and everywhere else.”

Bezos had offered David Shipley the opportunity to lead the editorial shift, but Shipley opted to step down. Bezos made it clear that he respected Shipley’s decision, remarking that if the answer to the proposition wasn’t “hell yes,” then it had to be “no.” The resignation was the continuation of an ongoing shift at the Post, signaling an intention to move the publication away from its overwhelmingly liberal reputation.

In an interview following the announcement, Bezos expressed his confidence in the editorial change, stating that he believed the viewpoints supporting free markets and personal liberties were currently underrepresented in mainstream media. “I’m excited for us together to fill that void,” Bezos concluded.

The editorial shift has already drawn a strong reaction from within the Post’s newsroom. Some staff members voiced concerns that Bezos might eventually seek to influence the news side of the operation as well. “I still have not felt encroachment on my journalism on the news side of coverage,” reporter Jeff Stein wrote, adding that if Bezos attempted to interfere with the news side of the Post, he would resign.

On the other hand, there are questions about whether Bezos’s attempt to champion individual liberty and free markets will be enough to revive the Post, which has faced ongoing criticism for its perceived liberal bias.

Questions remain about what exactly Bezos means by “personal liberty.” Some have speculated that the definition could extend to issues like freedom of speech and economic autonomy, or potentially challenge the merits of identity politics.

Critics have pointed out that mainstream media has often endorsed more centralized government interventions and policies focused on “fairness” and “equity,” rather than emphasizing the values of individual freedom and market-driven solutions. If Bezos is sincere about supporting a broader range of political and economic perspectives, it could challenge other outlets to do the same.

If Bezos can maintain his position while resisting external pressures to revert to a more progressive editorial approach, the Post could emerge as a more balanced voice in the media landscape. However, if the changes are merely cosmetic, or if the editorial direction fails to resonate with existing readers or attract new ones, the paper will likely face continued struggles to redefine itself in an increasingly fragmented media environment.

I care much less about the opinion page, than I do about removing opinions and propaganda from news pages.

The statement sounds great, but a quick look at today’s WaPo Opinion section reveals the same virulent, Trump-hating nonsense that’s always been there.
