DOJ Hunts Suspect After Attack on U.S. Attorney Alina Habba’s Office
The Department of Justice is actively searching for a suspect after an individual allegedly attacked the New Jersey office of U.S. Attorney Alina Habba late Wednesday night.
Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed the incident Thursday, saying, “An individual attempted to confront one of our U.S. Attorneys… destroyed property in her office, and then fled. Thankfully, Alina is ok.”
Habba responded defiantly on X, “I will not be intimidated by radical lunatics for doing my job.”
Habba — formerly one of Donald Trump’s most visible lawyers and now his appointed U.S. Attorney for New Jersey — has become a high-profile target of political hostility amid her promise to “end the weaponization of the justice system.”
The attack marks the latest escalation in a disturbing national trend of violence directed at political figures.
A Growing Pattern of Political Targeting
Recent incidents include an October 2025 assassination attempt on former President Trump, the September assassination of Charlie Kirk, the June 2025 shootings of multiple Minnesota legislators, and more broadly, over 25 targeted attacks or plots against government officials since 2016 — triple the total of the previous 25 years (CSIS).

DOJ Joins California GOP in Lawsuit to Block State’s New Congressional Map
The Department of Justice filed a federal complaint Thursday siding with the California Republican Party in its lawsuit to stop the state’s newly approved congressional map — arguing the redistricting plan unconstitutionally uses race to boost Democrats’ electoral prospects.
The map, backed by Gov. Gavin Newsom and state Democrats, could net the party as many as five additional House seats in 2026 — a potentially decisive shift given the chamber’s razor-thin margins.
Core of the DOJ’s Argument: Race as a Weaponized Redistricting Tool
The DOJ and California Republicans argue that the map relied excessively on Hispanic demographic data. Legislators and consultants openly stated they wanted to “empower Latino voters,” and critics say these admissions demonstrate race was the defining factor, not a secondary consideration.
Attorney General Pam Bondi called the plan a “brazen power grab” that “tramples civil rights and mocks the democratic process.”
Supporters counter that states like Texas have long gerrymandered aggressively and that California is “correcting the imbalance.” Critics call it an arms race in reverse — a state using race-based districting to engineer partisan control.
High Stakes for 2026
If the court blocks the map, California may need to revert to its old lines or adopt a court-drawn plan. Candidate filing deadlines could be disrupted and the case could rapidly ascend to the U.S. Supreme Court.
A handful of California seats could determine who controls the House in 2027.
Eric Swalwell Mulls Run for California Governor — As Trump Officials Refer Him for Investigation
Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) is weighing a run for governor, sources told MSNBC, with a possible announcement as early as next week — positioning him as an establishment-friendly foil to progressive frontrunner Katie Porter.
Other contenders include former HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra, former L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, and Businessman Stephen Cloobeck.
Sen. Alex Padilla has opted out.
Trump Allies Hit Back Immediately
On the same day the news broke, a Trump administration official referred Swalwell to the DOJ for potential criminal investigation into alleged mortgage and tax fraud.
Swalwell’s responded, “The only thing I’m surprised about is that it took him this long to come after me.”
The Fang Fang Factor Reappears
Swalwell’s connection to alleged Chinese agent Christine Fang continues to haunt him politically.
Fang fundraised for his 2014 bid and helped place an intern in his office. Swalwell cut ties after a federal counterintelligence briefing.
A classified intelligence report reportedly contains “intricate” details of the relationship, though the House Ethics Committee closed the investigation without action.
If Swalwell enters the race, these issues — along with the new allegations — are almost certain to resurface.
