Seattle has officially elected a socialist mayor. Katie Wilson, a longtime activist and founder of the city’s Transit Riders’ Union, narrowly defeated incumbent Democrat Bruce Harrell in a race that took more than a week to call due to Washington’s all-mail voting system.
According to Decision Desk HQ, Wilson captured 50.2% of the vote to Harrell’s 49.5%, flipping the result after late-counted mail-in ballots — heavily favoring progressives — pushed her over the top. The outcome marks a growing trend in a city already known for its far-left politics, as Wilson joins the ranks of openly socialist officials winning local power across America.
A Socialist Victory — and a Blow to Seattle’s Establishment Democrats
Wilson’s victory is being celebrated by the city’s activist left as another breakthrough for the “democratic socialist” wing of the Democratic Party, echoing the rise of New York City’s Zohran Mamdani, another far-left figure who recently won that city’s mayoral race.
Despite describing herself as “not super ideological,” Wilson has openly embraced the socialist label. “Yes, I’m fine with being called a socialist,” she told The Seattle Times in September, though she admitted she avoided “waving the socialist flag” during the general election campaign.
The 43-year-old activist, who is financially supported by her academic parents while her husband is reportedly unemployed, ran on a platform focused on “climate action and environmental justice,” “racial equity,” “police accountability,” and raising “new progressive revenue” — code for higher local taxes.
Her campaign was buoyed by an endorsement from Rep. Pramila Jayapal, one of Congress’s most prominent progressives, who switched her support from Harrell mid-race. Jayapal said Wilson would “fight for the principles of equity, immigrant justice, civil rights, and fundamental democratic rights that are all under threat right now.”
The Harrell Collapse
Incumbent Bruce Harrell, a comparatively moderate Democrat, initially appeared to have secured re-election when early returns showed him leading comfortably. Decision Desk HQ even called the race in his favor on November 6 — before retracting the projection the following day, after King County officials revealed that tens of thousands more ballots remained uncounted than initially reported.
Harrell had the backing of nearly every major establishment Democrat in Washington — including Governor Bob Ferguson, Senator Maria Cantwell, and Representative Adam Smith.
Seattle radio host Ari Hoffman argued that Harrell’s defeat was less a socialist surge than a self-inflicted wound. “Katie Wilson didn’t win an election, Bruce Harrell lost one,” Hoffman posted on X. “In desperation to get re-elected, he tried to out-progressive a progressive. He had no ballot harvest or ballot curing operation & his social media was non-existent.”
Hoffman also blasted Seattle’s universal mail-in ballot system as “a joke,” criticizing the lack of voter ID and the sluggish counting process. “What are they ‘verifying’ when there is no voter ID or other safeguards?” he wrote.
“Trump-Proofing” Seattle
Wilson’s campaign echoed national progressive rhetoric, vowing to “Trump-proof Seattle” — a slogan she borrowed from her early activist days. On her campaign website, she described her vision for a city that “stands up for the most vulnerable,” resists conservative policies, and expands government services in the name of “equity.”
Her agenda is expected to align closely with the city’s far-left factions, particularly the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), who have long wielded influence in Seattle politics through figures like Kshama Sawant, the outgoing socialist city councilmember.
What Comes Next for Seattle
Wilson’s victory underscores how dramatically Seattle’s political landscape continues to shift even compared to a decade ago. With soaring crime, homelessness, and business flight already plaguing the city, critics warn that her policies could accelerate Seattle’s decline.
Supporters, however, see Wilson’s win as proof that “progressive values” can triumph over centrist politics.
Seattle now joins a growing list of American cities where self-described socialists have seized control of local government.

Seattle and NYC anchor the destroyed cities of the east and west coasts. They are both crime-ridden sh*t holes that are not fit to live in.
For years the code for Communism was “progressive” but that has worn thin so the current go-term is “Democratic Socialism”.
