AOC’s Recent Attack on Republicans Backfires

It’s not unlike Democrat darling Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to fire off unprovoked attacks against Republicans and face no consequence, but this time the congresswoman was left speechless.

On Twitter, AOC suggested Republicans were to blame for Congress failing to raise the minimum wage last year. Conveniently leaving out the fact Democrats have a majority in the House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate.

“60% of workers report living paycheck-to-paycheck,” the Republican Party tweeted.

AOC responded: “And yet y’all still voted against raising the minimum wage.”

Her tweet was a thinly-veiled barb against Republicans, but Twitter fact-checking feature intervened to provide some much-needed clarity.

“The minimum wage has not changed since 2009,” the fact-check wrote, showing both parties have had adequate time to argue for and pass such a measure, but neither has.

“In 2021, Congress voted on a bill to raise the minimum wage. [It] passed 231-199 in the House,” the fact-check notice read. The bill was opposed by 192 Republicans, 8 Democrats and one independent. “Three Rs supported,” it added.

“Blocked 58-42 in the Senate. 7 Ds and one [Independent] joined all Rs to block the bill,” the fact check noted.

While the federal minimum wage is the least an employer can pay an employee, over half of the states have set the bar higher than the federal standard.

Nancy grew up in the South where her passion for politics first began. After getting her BA in journalism from Ole Miss she became an arts and culture writer for Athens Magazine where she enjoyed reporting on the eclectic music and art scene in Athens, GA.

However, her desire to report on issues and policies impacting everyday Americans won out and she packed her bags for Washington, DC. Now, she splits her time between the Nation’s Capital and Philadelphia where she covers the fast-paced environment of politics, business, and news.
In her off time, you can find Nancy exploring museums or enjoying brunch with friends.

Actually, in most cases, you can fix ignorance. However, when the ignorant is this woefully stupid, it really is a challenge.

The minimum wage is $0.00. The demand for labor is elastic. That means the higher the cost of paying people either through direct compensation or benefits the less will be demanded. Companies who have to minimize costs will substitute..robots for example or order/checkout kiosks. Basic Econ 101!!!
