Former Fox News host Bill O’Reilly recently found himself in the thick of a Cabinet-level discussion at Mar-a-Lago during an unplanned trip to meet with former President Donald Trump. The visit came after O’Reilly received what he described as a last-minute “summons” while vacationing in California.
Appearing on NewsNation’s On Balance with Leland Vittert, O’Reilly shared details of the surprise meeting and the conversations that unfolded. According to O’Reilly, he was brought into what he called a “literal Cabinet meeting” where Trump and his team debated policies, including tariffs designed to entice companies like Apple to bring manufacturing jobs back to the United States.
“I was on vacation out in California with my son when I got the call to head to Mar-a-Lago,” O’Reilly recounted. “When the president says, ‘Come on over,’ you go. So I rerouted from Los Angeles to Miami—an airport you really don’t want to visit unless you have to—and drove up to Mar-a-Lago. I had no idea why I’d been asked to come.”
O’Reilly, who has known Trump for over 35 years, speculated that his presence might have been more about entertainment than policy. “I think I amuse him sometimes,” he quipped, comparing Trump’s reaction to that of his On Balance host.
During his visit, O’Reilly also dined with Trump, who was eager to discuss the state of modern media. The former president pressed O’Reilly on his thoughts about “ascendent” media outlets versus those that are “through.” While O’Reilly didn’t name specific outlets, he suggested that Trump had effectively “killed corporate media.”
O’Reilly painted a picture of a more focused and experienced Trump than the one who entered the Oval Office in 2016. “Eight years ago, he was still figuring out what being president entailed and relied heavily on others. That’s not the case now,” O’Reilly observed. “He knows exactly what the job is and what he wants to do to deliver on his campaign promises.”
The unexpected invitation gave O’Reilly an up-close view of the former president’s evolving approach as he eyes another run for the White House, offering a glimpse into the mindset of the man who continues to shape the Republican Party.
