CNN senior political data reporter Harry Enten has sharply criticized President Joe Biden’s recent claim that he could have won reelection in 2024 if he had stayed in the race, calling the statement “flat-out bonkers.” Biden’s assertion came in an interview with USA Today this week, where he speculated that he could have beaten President-elect Donald Trump had he not dropped out of the race and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris.
“I think yes, based on the polling,” Biden said. However, his comments have raised eyebrows, especially as polling data from the period before his withdrawal paints a significantly different picture.
Enten, known for his data-driven political insights, wasted no time in debunking Biden’s optimistic narrative.
“Joe Biden in his exit interview with USA Today claims he could have beaten Donald Trump had he stayed in the race,” Enten began. “So this begs the question: Could Biden have won the 2024 election if he stayed in the race? Truthfully, I categorize this statement as flat-out bonkers.”
The CNN data expert then walked viewers through the polling numbers from around the time Biden dropped out in July 2024. These numbers, Enten pointed out, showed Trump leading Biden by significant margins in key battleground states — something Biden’s statement conveniently ignored.
“Look at those Great Lake battleground states,” Enten said, referencing Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. “Donald Trump was ahead in all three. How about here in the southeast, North Carolina, Georgia — again, Trump leads. How about here in the southwest, Nevada, Arizona — again, Trump leads.” Enten emphasized that it wasn’t just that Trump was ahead, but that the leads were substantial.
According to Enten, polling data from mid-2024 consistently showed Trump with leads ranging from 3 to 6 points over Biden in these key states. This was not a momentary blip, but a sustained pattern that indicated Biden was not positioned to win a hypothetical general election.
“Truthfully, Biden was behind in all of these states. Biden never led in all of 2024,” Enten continued. “And no incumbent president who was anywhere near as unpopular as Biden has ever won.”
Driving his point home, Enten presented a revealing visual: “Days Biden led Trump in 2024, when Biden was still in the race.” On the screen, a large “0” appeared.
“The bottom line is this: Joe Biden was behind, he had always been behind, and he most likely would have stayed behind,” Enten concluded. “And that’s why I categorize his statement that he could have won the 2024 election as flat-out bonkers.”
Readers should also note that despite Biden’s claims, Democratic internal polling predicted him losing to Trump by an even wider margin than Harris lost, and Trump winning a staggering 400 electoral college votes.
In his interview, Biden did concede that he wasn’t certain he had the “vigor” to endure another four years in office.
